When you were small, did you set out a plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve? Then, Christmas morning, you would know that Santa had visited, not only because of the presents under the tree and your now-full stocking, but also because the cookies, miraculously, were gone! Proof! If so, you were holding a common misconception. It isn’t Santa who eats the cookies at all (confidentially, he’s diabetic). No, it’s Wassail the Christmas Fairy! In fact, Santa never even sees the cookies since Wassail swoops in long before he arrives and gobbles down any tasty treats she finds. Then she tidies up a bit, makes sure the tree lights are especially twinkly and that the fireplace is swept out before fluttering out into the crisp, cold night in search of her next Christmas Eve snack. So always be sure to leave a little something for the Christmas Fairy, and here’s a tip: switch out the milk for tea. She’s lactose-intolerant.
