Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “Ruler of Swords” tarot card designed for an Art Nouveau deck.
I designed this piece as part of a proposal for an all-female tarot card deck to be depicted in an art nouveau style. I also wanted the women to have different ethnicities depending on suit and for the deck to combine astrological (signs) and wiccan (elements, Four Directions, seasons) components into each card in a meaningful way.
I see Swords as an Air suit, situated in the North in a stormy, icy landscape. Swords can signify power, control, quests, ambition, boldness and force. This card would be a “King” in a mixed gender deck, but it seemed that this woman’s wisdom and transcendence surpasses that of any king. She levitates above her carved stone throne, her enchanted sword hovering before her, and she is surrounded by symbols of air (incense, bells, butterflies, bell) as well as wisdom (her owl familiars). She says “I think”, “I balance” and “I envision”. I envisioned all the women in the Swords suit as being Asian. Her throne is carved at the base with the zodiac symbols Libra, Gemini and Aquarius. All swords are depicted in cool colors.
