Queen of Wands by WinonaCookie

Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “The Queen of Wands” tarot card designed for an Art Nouveau deck.

I designed this piece as part of a proposal for an all-female tarot card deck to be depicted in an art nouveau style. I also wanted the women to have different ethnicities depending on suit and for the deck to combine astrological (signs) and wiccan (elements, Four Directions, seasons) components into each card in a meaningful way.

I see Wands as a Fire suit, with a Southern direction, situated at noon during a blazing summer. Wands signify the spark of creativity, energy and growth, and I wanted my Queen of Wands to be truly regal and somewhat fierce. Believe me, I had no idea when I painted her that she would end up looking so much like our First Lady! She says, “I Am”, “I Will” and “I Know”. I envisioned all the women in the Wands suit as being African, and this Queen is seated in her throne with her sunflower amidst the most creative of endeavors ever: the pyramids. Her wand is carved with the zodiac symbols Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. All wands are depicted in hot colors and earth tones.

    That is forceful one..
Though it is Art Nuveau style and depicting many astrological symbols…I find that the piece is really exact into what the Femenine Royalties are meant i to the card decks. My one is Marseilles.. which is really austere in comparison.
But This Queen is fierce and strong… and with a look of real determination.
I have learnt that the Queens into the Royalty Characters…are really attachted to their symbols. And hold them with a even deffensive way. I love her the whole of it.

I am interested to know about your determination about doing a “all female Tarot card deck”…I find it interesting though I have my reticences about it. I have learnt that they are mostly androgious i the essence though they sing archetypes of Ying or Yang qualities. Or expressing the Animus or Anima of the Human Soul and its Archetypal Journey.
May be… when you’ll prepare it… would be real mind constructive to ope a topic forum in which you would give your feelings, about the idea of doing a female character Tarot deck…I could suggest reasons… but obviously are so subjective that they are not meaning at all…eager to hear about it from you or see it in your wonderful works of meaning art. Thanks for you participating.
