Original watercolor and inkline depiction of “The Chariot” tarot card designed for an Art Nouveau deck.
I designed this piece as part of a proposal for an all-female tarot card deck to be depicted in an art nouveau style. I also wanted the women to have different ethnicities depending on suit and for the deck to combine astrological (signs) and wiccan (elements, Four Directions, seasons) components into each card in a meaningful way.
The Chariot indicates control over tension of opposites, thus the two complementary women before the warrior (who is a woman – why not? :-)). They are opposite in every respect, yet identical as well. They also symbolize perfect balance with the yin yangs they hold in their hands. The warrior certainly looks like she could achieve triumph over any difficulty through perseverence, which is what I wanted to occur to someone immediately who draws this card. All of the traditional symbols from the Rider Waite deck are present in the warriors jewelry, scepter, etc., as well as the castle in the background depicting worldly success.
