An Artisan to me is someone who performs in the fine arts, but I believe that it would also refer to a craftsman or craftswoman who work in the trades. To me, it would be painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, music or literature…. And, oh yes, acting, cooking and design in it’s many and varied forms.
An Artisan is someone who is skilled in one of these areas and who does it for the enjoyment and pleasure of others…. either for payment or not. Visual, taste or hearing all fall in this category, but to me it must be harmonious. When an Artisan is involved in their special gift of creating, time passes quickly and without effort for they are doing what they love. They are doing what speaks to their soul and every breath they take.
An Artisan is truly blessed if they can make a living doing what they love, but would be equally satisfied to get together with others who share their same passion and produce a collaboration of talent for the enjoyment of others… or simply themselves. Their creativity is like a well that self perpetuates.
For me, being an Artisan is something that is just beginning to give birth. My Artisan is an infant who longs to grow and develop. Being an Artisan is a calling that when answered is more satisfying than anything else I have ever done in my life. As I create, this energy grows and creates more ideas that give wings to time and labor, leaving this most satisfied feeling. To be an Artisan is the true reward of living.
To me, being an Artisan is the highest form of life itself!
Thoughts on being an artisan…
I wrote this little piece when I was the acting editor for Emerald City Artisans and I managed our little newspaper. The friends I made here will always be kindred spirits, for we all felt the same way about the arts.
