Back about 1988, I rescued a little Chipmunk that had been orphaned and somehow had found her way into our shop/garage. Only a few days old, I was able to feed her with an eye dropper until she gathered the strength to eat on her own. Here, she is sitting on my table, graced with wild sweet peas and eating corn. I would carry her around in my shirt pocket and even took her to a family picnic in the Skagit Valley where she was the honored guest.. She was not very happy about the smoke from the bonfire, but she stayed with me the whole time.
Then one day, as our construction employees were arriving for morning coffee, as was our custom, another little Chipmunk ran into my house, said a few little chirpy things to my little friend and off they both ran outdoors. It was like he told her that it time for her to come and join the clan.
Well, after that, when I would walk out to pick up the mail, she would come and sit with me while I sat on the front porch opening the mail. My sweet little friend gave that summer such a special meaning and memory. The photograph is old and I scanned it, so the image is not of the best quality, but the memories are priceless…
