I have always loved Japanese style architecture, but now when I see this image, I think of our friendship with Japan and the gardens we have created in their honor as a visual expression of our connectedness. Now when I look at this, I say another prayer for all of the people of Japan and the horrific experiences they are facing and their many losses. Please join me in my on-going prayers for their survival and well being. Reclaiming their peaceful lives staggers the imagination and I hope and pray for their strength and resiliance.

Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, Washington is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. The 702-acre park includes Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, the Rose Garden, Rhododendron Garden, the Camp 6 Logging Museum, beaches, trails, a boardwalk, a boathouse, a Washington State Ferries ferry dock, Fort Nisqually, and most notably a stand of old-growth forest. More than two million people visit it every year. Point Defiance Park is maintained and operated by the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma.

A focal point of Point Defiance Park’s Japanese Garden, the Pagoda was built in 1914 as a replica of a 17th century Japanese Lodge. It was originally a waiting room for streetcars. Now this magnificent structure functions as a rental facility for weddings and other private parties as well as a venue for garden shows, lectures and concerts. Gardens surrounding the Pagoda feature pools, a waterfall, a picturesque footbridge, cherry trees, azaleas and rhododendrons.

The Japanese Garden at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma, Washington. This was a lovely place to sit and enjoy nature and the peaceful feeling on a lovely warm May afternoon.

These features were originally a gift to the City of Tacoma from its “sister city”, Kitakyushu, Japan in 1961. The Japanese Gardens are a work in progress that continue to reflect the rich cultural heritage of Tacoma.

Cameras and photography captured my interest years ago as a child with my little Brownie. The cameras have changed over the years until the Digital age when I got really serious about photography. Not only has my work improved, but it has opened many doors to meeting wonderful people along the way. New friendships and learning new skills… I am hopeful that some of my best work is yet to come.
