I think these gorgeous blue Hydrangeas are my most favorite of cottage country flowers. A little bit of the right fertilizer, prune once after the first freeze and they are totally carefree. This particular kind is “Endless Summer” Hydrangea. They will bloom all summer long, right up until frost. Next year they should be chest high.

Hydrangea, (common names Hydrangea and Hortensia) is a genus of about 70-75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia (China, Korea, Japan, the Himalayas, and Indonesia) and North and South America. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Korea, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1-3 m tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.

Having been introduced to the Azores Islands of Portugal, they are now very common there, particularly on Faial Island, which is known as the “blue island” due to the vast number of hydrangeas present on the island, and on Flores Island.

Species in the related genus Schizophragma, also in Hydrangeaceae, are also often known as hydrangeas. Schizophragma hydrangeoides and Hydrangea petiolaris are both commonly known as climbing hydrangeas.

There are two flower arrangements in hydrangeas. Mophead flowers are large round flowerheads resembling pom-poms or, as the name implies, the head of a mop. In contrast, lacecap flowers bear round, flat flowerheads with a center core of subdued, fertile flowers surrounded by outer rings of showy, sterile flowers.

Cameras and photography captured my interest years ago as a child with my little Brownie. The cameras have changed over the years until the Digital age when I got really serious about photography. Not only has my work improved, but it has opened many doors to meeting wonderful people along the way. New friendships and learning new skills… I am hopeful that some of my best work is yet to come.

A lovely capture and theme. I love the contrast between the rich blue and the stunning white of the chair. That hat really gives the human touch too. Wonderful.

  • Thank you so much, Gloria. I have automatic watering system in this garden and the right kind of fertilizer certainly helps, for the soil is the absolute worst. Thank you so much for your sweet words.
