Oh dear! I shall be late! (Alice and the White Rabbit) by

Watercolours and water-soluble colour pencils on paper. 29,7 × 42 cm (11,6″ × 16,5").

“Oh dear! I shall be late!” it is the first watercolour of my series entitled “A journey in Wonderland”, which was inspired by one of my favourite books: “Alice in Wonderland”, published in 1865 by the British mathematician and writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, known worldwide as Lewis Carroll.

This funny and colourful image, conceived from the chapter “Down the Rabbit-Hole”, introduces us to one of the most important scenes from the book: Alice’s encounter with the famous White Rabbit with pink eyes. This chance meeting, which is the beginning of the bizarre adventures of the girl in Wonderland, would have never been extraordinary if Alice hadn’t noticed that the rabbit was wearing a waistcoat and also looking at the time on a pocket watch. Alice was so amazed that she didn’t hesitate to follow with curiosity the frantic and elusive character; running across the field after it and, later, see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge. What happen next is more than well known for us: Alice would fall down the hole, as deep as a tunnel, and her life would change forever.

Scenes like this remind us that we live in a world full of wonders and surprises, and that the course of our existence can have an unexpected twist at any time — influenced by the most insignificant details even — but, despite all the efforts we do to control our actions, the unforgiving watch hands of time keep turning around hopelessly, strangers to our mistakes or successes.
