Peugeot 205 T16 by Willie Jackson

Canvas Prints

Peugeot entered Group B with a highly modified version of their 205 hatchback in 1984. Between the original 205 and the 205 T16, the overall body-shape was the only common element. The unitary chassis/body construction was abandoned for a lightweight tubular frame construction and the engine was moved from the front to the rear. Following Audi’s four wheel drive Quattro rally cars, the 205 T16 was equipped with an all wheel drive system. The rally car’s name was derived from the engine’s layout of 16 valves per cylinder and the addition of a Garrett Turbocharger. Helped by an intercooler, the Turbocharged 1.8 litre engine was quoted at 450 bhp.

Confirmed Petrol Head first and foremost, who happens to enjoy photography as a hobby.
I was bitten by the motor sport bug at a young age and prefer long distance sports car racing over single seaters. I also love the passion and enthusiasm of the owners and drivers of historic race cars and find this form of motorsport, as well as rallying, the most spectacular because of the lower grip levels and loose style of driving employed.

Terrific action, love the marshall hiding behind the tree, better safe than sorry!

  • Thanks Bill. The marshall is actually a photographer and, judging by some of the antics I have seen posted on youtube, behind a tree was the best place to be for the accredited guys!

This was the 205 Turbo 16 Evo 2 with the big rear wing. Great car, great but dangerous time in rallying… it all ended in 1986 after huge accidents during the Portugal rally and the Tour de Corse.

  • Thanks for the info, I struggle with rally cars. Henri Toivenen wasn’t it in Corsica? I think 450bhp in a car like that sums up the dangers…..

I love Pugs too…had a few in my time!
This one is the all time favourite though…possibly barring the pre-war LeMans 402 Darl M’at coupe.

The original T16 actually was unitary construction, the Evo 2 was tubular spaceframe and was lighter and stronger.
The road going versions put out around 200-250hp IIRC but the motor was developed over 500hp in the Pikes Peak hillclimb variants…search “climbdance” on youtube to see what I mean!
The group B guys were certifiably insane…but I’d give my left arm to be able to go back in time and join them!

  • Thanks for the comment. You need to get on to Wiki and update their page on this car!
