The Mark II Escort won the RAC Rally every year from 1975–79 as well as a variety of other events around the world. In the 1979 World Rally Championship, Björn Waldegård took the drivers’ title, Hannu Mikkola was runner-up and Ari Vatanen finished the year in fifth place, all driving Escort RS1800s, giving Ford the manufacturers’ title. Vatanen won the drivers’ title in 1981 at the wheel of an RS1800. Even 35 years after it was first used in anger, the Mark II Escort is still a hugely popular car, not only in Historic Rallying, but also as a weapon of choice for many clubmen. The RS1800 shown here was driven by Malcom Wilson to victory in the 2008 Roger Albert Clark (RAC) Rally.
