I remember attending
my first teaching on Emptiness
A professor of Philosophy attempting to explain
using a glass as a metaphor

Here is a glass
half filled with water
Is the glass half empty
or is the glass half full?
And is it in fact a glass at all?

I remember my WTF thinking
as I walked away
and the kernel of a seed
beginning to sprout

I can still picture Jampa Kaldan
so patiently teaching on Emptiness
and us sitting on the floor in a circle afterwards
discussing what we interpreted
the teaching to mean

Then the dawning of my consciousness
of the filters and labels that rule our lives
and the inevitability of the decisions we make
because of them, keeping the glass half empty

and if we were to drop the filters
bringing us into This moment
how our choices would be Open
to the endless possibility of life

When serendipity (with a name a lot like Viola)
afforded me a ticket
I was launched into an adventure
where I can still feel the Bliss that amassed
as we entered The Rod Laver Arena

in Melbourne, May 2002
to attend teachings
with His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama
and he happened to teach on Emptiness…

I remember driving back
along the Great Ocean Road
with my heart sister Jayne
and stopping into Glenelg River
to set up camp for the night

We landed on a dirt road
where we pulled up to park
and walked down a secreted wooden pier
which orchestrated at the rivers edge

The silence
was all encompassing
The stillness of the water
like glass

The canopy of trees
reflected back
in the mirrored water

Nothing moved
Nothing sounded
Nothing smelt

there was Everything
in that moment
and there was Nothing
at all

And in that nothingness
the potential was endless
the sense of reverence

And fresh from my teachings
with His Holiness
I knew in an instant
that This was Emptiness

Immeasurable Beauty

and inter-Connection

And that from this place
All things were possible

My hand was empty
but my life was full

Of unlimited potential

I smiled
at the centre
of my heart space

All things were possible

Bless-ed Be

Artist's Description

emptiness is the space between a perceived event and the reaction to it…
that peace filled pause where we get to choose how me might react at any given moment…
the self induced gap which gifts choice, rather than the old knee jerk reactions of anger, puppetry and blame…
world peace resides in emptiness…
we can all do with a little emptiness in our lives…xxx

For Pink Panther Magazine: a journey where two heart sisters explore their spiritual side together, midst times of marriage, children and responsibilities is indeed a necessity for sanity, and a gift women need to own and gift to themselves…
