The I as mirror

You sat in the conviction of my abstinence
squirming
in the face of your own addiction

I did not judge you
only walked alone by your side

You swam in the loneliness of your solitude
telling
large stories of your sexual exploits

as I kept my long term relationship small
yet somehow managed to conjure the justification of your desirability
by my presence alone

I called by to cheer you in your funk
bringing smiles
and sisterhood, with listening and chocolate

yet my equilibrium only managed to spotlight
your general state of malaise

How is it that in the face of silence
our very selves are mirrored?

It takes not a wicked witch
to hold the mirror
only us

Artist's Description

It always amazes me, how our shadow selves are projected onto others, yet we often remain oblivious to our own short comings in ourselves…the human condition is fickle indeed…
