Artist's Description

Things are warming up in the Antarctic Peninsula. While it is true that some parts of Antarctica are actually getting colder, not so with the Peninsula itself, where the average temperature has warmed by as much as 9 degrees Fahrenheit in the last 50 years. This change to the climate has all sorts of effects on the animals living here. Adelie penguins (who are ice dependent) are being pushed further and further south as there is less ice. Even more alarming with the loss of ice comes the loss of habitat for krill, specifically Euphausia superba, the animal that every living creature in Antarctica depends on at some level. While change in ecosystems is inevitable over time, the rate of change I see as I visit these places time and again is truly alarming. Is an ice-free Antarctic Peninsula a true possibility? Stick around, I guess we’ll all find out together…
