This curious lone adult emperor penguin seems dwarfed against the bow of the National Geographic Explorer deep in Antarctica below the Antarctic Circle. The nearest emperor colony is many, many miles away…just what is this penguin doing so far from home? At almost 4 feet in height and 100 lbs in weight this is the largest of all living penguin species. I was thrilled to find this lone emperor while driving a Zodiac tour. A quick call to the bridge and Captain Oliver Kruess positioned the ship perfectly for this image, but I have to wonder; who is watching whom here?

Wow Michael, this is awesome, love all the people in red, poor penguin all on his own, would he survive? nice captain to position this for you, you know people in high places lol……love this image, well done :o)x

  • Aloha Josie!

Thank you for your kind words. This emperor is still very young, probably 2 or 3 and out foraging for food. It is not unusual that an emperor would travel hundreds of miles from the colony for this exact reason. He (or she) will be fine!
