I had the extreme good fortune to spend about three months on Midway Atoll at the extreme northwestern end of the Hawaiian Islands (did you know there are 132 islands in Hawaii?) I spent each and every day in the protected waters of the inner atoll, working with these magnificent dolphins. At night the dolphins leave the protection of the atoll to feed in deep water, then return each morning through breaks in the reef to rest and relax. Here it is late afternoon and this pair of spinners is preparing to leave the atoll to head out to deep water to feed.

What a brilliant capture Michael- seems you were pretty much level with them .

  • Yes Rosie, I was almost at water level in a VERY small boat. I always try to get as close to sea level as possible to photograph dolphins, it is so much more intimate than higher up!

Crystal clear spot on capture, & I so envy you the experience… :-)

  • Thanks Paul,

Midway has undergone some enormous changes since it was first built up as a fuel stop and later military base in the middle of the Pacific! If you ever get the chance I would tell you to GO!
