South Georgia Sunrise of Kings by

Finally! After five different trips to South Georgia it all comes together, as weather and sea conditions allow for a pre-dawn landing in St. Andrews Bay. It’s 04:42 AM as the sun comes up and paints the sky amazing shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. King penguins surround me as they return from their trip away from the nest in order to feed at sea. My camera clicks and whirs as the sun climbs higher. I feel the time slipping away as the sun gains altitude, warming the scene but losing that magnificent quality to the early light. Finally I am spent, physically and emotionally. It’s only 7:00AM and already I am king for a day!

A masterpiece. Michael, this is an awesome photo. If 5 trips is what it took to achieve this, then it was worth it. You must be a very patient man. The light is perfect, the penguins are gorgeous, and there’s even a rogue sea lion in the background. I bet you’re really happy with this photo :-)

  • Aloha Neil! Thanks for your kind words! I can only smile at your reference to patience. Since so many of my wildlife images are taken at shutter speeds of 1/1000 or faster I can truly say that there are days and days and sometimes even months of waiting just to get a full second worth of images. The magic and privilege are in the experience…the photo is the frosting on the cake. Be well!
