Language is no barrier.... by

Two strangers walking side by side
Taking the path to a majestic place
High up in the mountains the trail weaves its way
Trekking through the lush green forest
Chewing cocoa leaves to ease the pain
Their steps are equal, their movement slow
Glancing over to face the strangers face
No words were said but silence is evaded
They acknowledge each other’s presence
With a faint smile, a nod of the head
Language is no barrier, eyes speak many words
There is hope and happiness in these faces
Precious time shared on a sacred trail
The hike is long and arduous, but refreshing all the same
There comes a time when the two must part
An offering of hands, a gentle shake
A friendly smile and both are on their way

When I reached the Sun Gate I looked down and saw
That majestic place, the wonder of Machu Picchu
The emotion of the journey was such I did not fail
I cried all the way.

This picture was taken on day one of the Inca Trail, of which I completed in 3 days. I started on 30 December 2000 and arrived at Machu Picchu on 1 January 2001. I walked with this girl for about half an hour. The trail was an experience I shall never forget and am so glad I decided to do….. in January 2001 the Peruvian Government put a restriction on the number people being able to do the trail each year, and I suspect that have been made even greater.

    Wow this is great Helen!

  • Thanks Mark, I’ve been meaning to put this up for ages, I really need to get a better copy of the photo, it was taken on film and the negatives have got damaged… I keep a journal whenever I travel so I can remember everything about my travels… comes in handy, esp now!

  • thank you Shar, whenever I travel I always keep a journal, it’s normally very long and I write everything down, it’s always a good read beacuse you forget sometimes just what it was like…. pictures are lovely but having a written account relives the trip for me…

I envy you Helen, what a wonderful experiance, something I would love to see first hand, an adventure such as this.

  • if I didn’t have to work, I would travel….. my list of places to visit is so long…. this was a childhood dream fulfilled, well the dream was the train journey, which i did after the walk…. but to stand at the Sun Gate was amazing despite being completely shattered from the walk I still found the energy to explore the site…
