Colchester is the oldest recorded town in Britain. It was originally the Roman capital Camulodunum.
Colchester Castle has the largest castle keep in Europe measuring 152 × 112 feet ( 46 × 34 metres ). It was built on the Roman temple of Claudius ( 54-60AD ). The Castle was completed in around 1100. Unfortunately the upper structure was pulled down for building material in the 17th Century.
