Inspired by traditional Japanese art I decided to explore the elusive yet beautiful world of being a Geisha.
“Geisha” ( pronounced ‘Gay-sha’ ) means artist in Japanese. The ‘real’ Geisha was not a common prostitute, the first Geishas were men who entertained patrons through artistry. The Geisha evolved into being the role of a woman in Japan, holding the equivalent status to celebrities today for their time.
The different forms of art they performed were tea ceremonies, dancing, calligraphy, painting, music, not to mention they were and still are walking pieces of art. Hence, these amazing iconic figures have inspired paintings with a contemporary edge.

This picture brings to mind one of my favorite books “Memiors of a Geisha”. Is that the inspiration?
oops you answered that already… I should read the previous comments before I post my own. I love how you captured her!
The Geisha in general has inspired a series of works on this theme, this being part of the other paintings that are on this site. Bringing a contemporary edge to the subject felt good and I loved that book/movie too, the character obviously inspiring the water in her soul. :) thanks :)
