This is lovely Simon, you’ve captured a lot of intensity – and I like the lighting – is it natural light?

Excellent, Mate. Great color, comp, and clarity, and you caught a very intense look. Very well done, as always.

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks mate, it was quite a hard image get but it sure was worth the effirt (and Jakes blindness in his right eye, I figure I GAVE him that eye so it is only fair I be able to take it away too.)

Hi Simon… this image came up as recent work in the Amateur Photographers Association group but it must have really had an impact on me as I remembered seeing it yesterday in another group. This time, and I am sorry I should have done it the first time, I felt compelled to comment on it. It is an amazingly powerful image. The lighting, the lines etc are all perfect but what makes this really stand out is the amount of emotion it invokes when you see it. It is stunning work and congratulations on the features they are well deserved. xx

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks Sue, Jake (and I) have Aspergers Syndrome (a type of autism that basically means subtle social cues can difficult to pick up amongst other things) and the look on his face struck me as a representation of the disorder, kind of quizzicly peering out of the darkness into something foreign.
Thanks for your wonderful comment, I can not tell you how much it means to me when someone spends such time.

  • Justine Devereux

    Justine Devereux

I can definitely see what you mean.. i spent a good minute looking into Jakes eye just then… he does look confused and almost searching to understand that world out there.. like being in the shadows/on the periphery of life is exactly how he must feel a lot of the time… I’m sure that with you and Mel as the wonderful parents you are, you give him the constant support, love and encouragement he (and you!) needs to be himself and not feel he has to ‘fit in’.. we are after all All diferent and unique individuals.. regardless..
am going to BM you a poem..
    love
    xx

Hi Simon…. that so makes sense now! When I looked at Jacob there was a conflict in my mind of whether he felt trapped (as the shadow across his face represents) or whether he was just very curious about something he was seeing. As a nurse for 26 years and having come into contact with many people with Aspergers, Jacob may very well have been feeling either of these things. I hope he was not feeling trapped but sadly the condition can be such that others (naively) believe he is different which makes him feel a prisoner in his own mind. You know all this Simon, I am just hoping that if anyone else reads this they will see that ‘originality’ does not mean ‘abnormal’. Jacob is a gorgeous looking boy and with a father who fully understands ‘other peoples’ problems, you will guide him to fulfill all of his dreams. People who have Aspergers are often highly creative which is obvious having looked at your other work just now. Be proud of yourself and of Jacob… and I send you both cyber hugs too xx

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks again Sue, Jake travels along ok and has a couple of friends which is a big hurdle as I am sure you know. Fortunately the school does a tremendous job as well and I am sure this is why he is doing as well as he is. Aspergers is a bugger of a thing but as you say there are positives to be found if you look and I think it has contributed well to my photography.
I’d like to thank you for your understanding and kind words also.

  • Liane Pinel

    Liane Pinel

This is an amazing image!! This is what is needed on the wall of every parents office to remind them that being a ‘tween’ or a teen can be so confusing and even more so if there are health issues like you and your son share. My eldest son went through a period where we thought it might be bi-polar but after testing and therapy it was determines to just being a teenager….that’s what they said…’Just being a teenager’ and “he’ll outgrow it’....thankfully he did but good grief what a time that was!! Confusion, internalized, life and fear…powerful image my friend…bravo!

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks so much Liane, that is a lovely comment. It is easy at times to forget they don’t have our experience and everything is new and ever changing. I am so glad to hear that your son was just suffering “Testosterone related, transitory Bipolar” disorder. It is a cruel thing to be afflicted with.
