  • susi lawson

    susi lawson

Beautiful capture, nice that it is not completely frozen and has the movement conveyed!

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks Susi, I was marked down on that very fact in a comp. My argument is the movement adds a sense of life to the photo. I am glad you like it.

  • susi lawson

    susi lawson

I agree! It makes the picture! why do so many think, because we have such fast shutters now, that any blur is obsolete? The technical ability sometimes overbears the artistry.

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Exactly, clarity is not the be all and end all.

  • JulesVandermaat

    kathy s gillen...

    beautiful capture

  • Simon Whittaker replied

  • deannedaffy

    deannedaffy

    Wow this is just beautiful!!
Oh you make me miss my dancing days!!!

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Ha ha ha – I thought it might evoke that feeling in someone. I went back to self defence training in my mid 30’s after being inspired back to it, hit the deck the first time and decided it is better to watch other people.

  • slavko

    slavko

I see seven legs moving like a dance of the swans, beautiful, worthy of digital lenses, I also remember the master Degas

  • Simon Whittaker replied

I saw the 7th leg and used it as a toll to see how many people paid more than a cursory glance at the image. I have to tell you that I am very honoured that this image would remind you of Degas. The girls are very elegant and I hope to do more soon.

  • John44

    John44

Simon … man.. this is :
A poster hanging outside the Royal albert Hall
This is a photo for the National Geographic..This belongs inside the book: Ballet for pro’s..
Tell me honest.. did you ‘just shot’ and hoped for good luck or was it calculated ?!
In fact .. this .. in y view .. belongs in the red Bubble top 100 !
    Respectfully :
    John

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks so much John, that is the nicest comment I have ever had. The shot was basically as taken but converted to mono and tweaked a fraction in PS. The lighting in the hall was terrible and it was shot at f2.8 at 1/50 at 800ISO, I wanted to get a sense of movement in the feet though so didn’t boost the ISO any further. I did a few shots that day which are also on here.
Thanks again John, you have really made my day.

  • Joanne Bradley

    Joanne Bradley

Brilliant angle and point of view! I really like your classical choice of ballet in b & w but particularly I like your focus on the legs when so many times we are shown the whole dancer. I am taking notes Simon, my daughter runs a dance school for children and I will be going in June to help her out for the year end recital and I think I have to start looking for the non-obvious to get a good shot!

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thank you Joanne, it is really nice to get such fantastic feedback. The best tip I can give you is to go to the dress rehersal rather than the main concert day for the photos.

superb image Simon, fantastic composition and tone. Well done!
