Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Jane, the light really lent itself to mono – I’m glad really.
Nicholas Richa...
Wow! This may be the best from this set so far, and they’ve all been top notch. The most popular adjective would seem to be ‘stunning’ and I totally agree with that assessment. This is a truly stunning image, Simon.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much Nick, I am flattered. I really appreciate the kind words.
fallenrosemedia
absolutely wonderful
Simon Whittaker replied
Thankyou for that – I’m glad you like it.

Sensational work Matt!!!! The focus is perfect and the little bit of movement gives the image so much character, awesome stuff!! It goes without saying that the BW is the icing on the cake!
simonesphotos
Gawd, sorry Simon, I was looking at Matt’s comment when I was typing, Doh!! Of course I knew it was your work!!!! Forgive me!! ;o)
Simon Whittaker replied
No worries Simone – I’ve done the same thing countless times myself. It is also flattering to think that it could also be confused with one of Matts photos – he is brilliant. Thanks for the kind words too.

This shot pulls you in and I just keep finding new things to admire about it – I think the shape of and focus on their feet is my favourite part.

Thanks Moshen, I must admit Ballerinas are fascinating – I’d like to do some more work with them.
John Robb
Great work Simon.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much John, just having a look at your work now.
susi lawson
Beautiful capture, nice that it is not completely frozen and has the movement conveyed!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Susi, I was marked down on that very fact in a comp. My argument is the movement adds a sense of life to the photo. I am glad you like it.
susi lawson
I agree! It makes the picture! why do so many think, because we have such fast shutters now, that any blur is obsolete? The technical ability sometimes overbears the artistry.
Simon Whittaker replied
Exactly, clarity is not the be all and end all.
JulesVandermaat
Love this. Am a ballet dancer from way back, so this sight brings back lots of memories.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks again Jules, I really like this image, I am glad you like it too. I am hoping to do more at some stage soon.

melbourneguy75
This is simply gorgeous, I’d love to get some ballet shots like this. Stunning perspective and capture :)
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks David, the light was very challenging and actually aided with the movement blur. I highly recommend trying to access a dance studio – it is a really great exercise.

kathy s gillen...
beautiful capture
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Kathy, the lighting here was really difficult and pushed the lens and camera to its boundary – a little less light and I wouldn’t have one of my own favs.
deannedaffy
Wow this is just beautiful!!
Oh you make me miss my dancing days!!!
Simon Whittaker replied
Ha ha ha – I thought it might evoke that feeling in someone. I went back to self defence training in my mid 30’s after being inspired back to it, hit the deck the first time and decided it is better to watch other people.
Jonicool
Beautiful work!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much, the girls deserve the credit though – htey were amazing to watch.
Cindy Olivier
I know i already commented, but i need to remind you how stunning this is…... it must be the dancer in me….
Simon Whittaker replied
Ha ha ha, you know I have done exactly the same thing a few times. I see the image again somewhere and I just get the compulsion to re-comment. That fact that you have really is a great honour. Thanks so much.

slavko
I see seven legs moving like a dance of the swans, beautiful, worthy of digital lenses, I also remember the master Degas
Simon Whittaker replied
I saw the 7th leg and used it as a toll to see how many people paid more than a cursory glance at the image. I have to tell you that I am very honoured that this image would remind you of Degas. The girls are very elegant and I hope to do more soon.
John44
Simon … man.. this is :
A poster hanging outside the Royal albert Hall
This is a photo for the National Geographic..This belongs inside the book: Ballet for pro’s..
Tell me honest.. did you ‘just shot’ and hoped for good luck or was it calculated ?!
In fact .. this .. in y view .. belongs in the red Bubble top 100 !
Respectfully :
John
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much John, that is the nicest comment I have ever had. The shot was basically as taken but converted to mono and tweaked a fraction in PS. The lighting in the hall was terrible and it was shot at f2.8 at 1/50 at 800ISO, I wanted to get a sense of movement in the feet though so didn’t boost the ISO any further. I did a few shots that day which are also on here.
Thanks again John, you have really made my day.
María González
F A N T A S T I C !
Simon Whittaker replied

powerful/not the everyday photograph/that is for sure/LOVE IT
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much, that is a fantastic comment and I am deeply appreciative.
Joanne Bradley
Brilliant angle and point of view! I really like your classical choice of ballet in b & w but particularly I like your focus on the legs when so many times we are shown the whole dancer. I am taking notes Simon, my daughter runs a dance school for children and I will be going in June to help her out for the year end recital and I think I have to start looking for the non-obvious to get a good shot!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you Joanne, it is really nice to get such fantastic feedback. The best tip I can give you is to go to the dress rehersal rather than the main concert day for the photos.
Antanas
great composition and angle
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you very much, I really appreciate the favouriting too.
Samantha Lewan...
Perfection… you’ve done it again!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks again Samantha, you have made my day, I am heading over to look at your work now.
David Petranker
There is actually eight legs, in the background you can see the black tights on the legs, onderful image my friend
Simon Whittaker replied
Ahh yes Grass hopper, that is my test to see who actually LOOKS at my images – you have passed!
micklyn
Breathtaking image – and I like what you have written on your profile, feel like I could just copy and paste it to mine and it would be all true (except for the part about the lovely camera!) Look forward to seeing more of your work!
Simon Whittaker replied
ha ha ha, yep – the camera is a good peice of gear but it is nice to meet a kindered spirit.
Elucidate
Great capture, timing and composition.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks for that, some people don’t like this image because there is movement in the feet but I kinda like it.

Trish O'Brien
Simon I think this has got to be the perfect shot. I do hope you submit it to dance companies and schools – its not only an incredibly beautiful piece of art, but its also potentially really inspirational to young ballet dancers too!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much Trish, I haven’t approached anyone yet, I gave a copy to the dance company I was shooting but thats all.
Janine Branigan

Christian Hartung
absouletly magnificant piece of work, very well done!!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you very much. The movement blur in the legs has been an issue for some people but I quite like it.

Anthony Mancuso
superb image Simon, fantastic composition and tone. Well done!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks again. Funny image this, people either really like the motion blur in the feet or see it as a weakness – personally I like the sense of dynamism that the movement injects. Funny how subjective these things can be!
Monique Alvis

Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Monique, I really appreciate that.
