like this great angle , tones and composition good on you !!
Simon Whittaker
Thanks for that, this style of shot is a bit new for me. I’m glad to get the comment.
Tollwut
GREAT!
Simon Whittaker replied
Hey, I like your stuff. Your nudes are so different from anything I’ve seen before – absolutely great.
Simon Whittaker
Thanks for that, appreciate it.
DavidAmosPhoto...
Great stuff Simon!! – This is a great still life.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks David, I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. This is the first shot of this kind so your comments mean alot.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks David, now I remember your name – you have the Lensbaby group. Your comment means alot to me – thank you.
Alessandro Pinto
lovely composition…beautifully focused ! Great work !
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you elbambino, your work and comments have given me an enormous lift and inspiration to push my boundaries and flex my photographic brain.
Thanks again
momma2four
Cool shot! Nice perspective and selective coloring. I love a good puzzle!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you Christine, I am glad you like it.
Normf
Simon you’ve got to do this more often, Great tones and style. I’ll have to talk to you about this!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Norm, I appreciate it. Would be good to catch up.
Matthew Walters
I like this Simon. The muted colours everywhere other than the drink, the part completed jigsaw and the glasses all work together to give a feeling of loneliness.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Matthew, I am so glad to hear you say that. Thank you for the feedback – I really appreciate it.
Lois Romer
love this shot, so telling yet simple. I am a jigsaw fan asw ell never thought of photographing it, well done.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you Lois, I really appreciate the feedback. The table top faces away from the sun (and between you and I most of my portrait shots are taken using the light from this window) and it gives a good tonal range on the dark wood. See what kind of photo you can do with jigsaw pieces one day and let me know if you like.
Micki Ferguson
I LOVE these types of pictures
I do them for myself and don’t ever upload them because I’m too chicken HA HA HA
I have then on photo.net
But here I do the mainstream stuff.
This is wonderful with the dof and the “game theme” I would put it on my wall.
I would love it in B&W with a slight sepia tone too (all together)
Simon Whittaker
Wow, thanks for that. You should put your shots on – its a bit nerve wracking but hey – whats the worst that can happen. I didn’t try b&w or sepia with the image because I really liked the muted tones and then the colour in the Bourbon but I will give it a try.
And thanks for the watch listing and favouriting too, I really appreciate it.
Dave Hiskey
good shot, simon…like the concept…great colour and angle…for me I would have lifted the highlight tones on the table a tiny bit but thats my view and many would disagree, we are all different , so you keep doing what your doing…nice one
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Dave, I really appreciate the feedback and the compliment. I’ll give that suggestion a shot.
BlaizerB
davehiskey has a point and possibly a very slightly tighter crop are all i could suggest – hard to give suggestions on improving an otherwise superb shot. a great stock image too. i really like the edge blur on this and composition. it is full of interest. gr8.
cheers
Simon Whittaker
Thanks for that, croppin g is not my strong point I’d have to say so any suggestions are welcome.
Von McKnelly
I was immediately draw into this shot to see what’s going on. Light direction and layout of the props is perfect. A killer story indeed.
A tighter crop and less on the blur would be my feedback.
Simon Whittaker
Thanks for that, appreciate the feedback of the crop. Will give it a try.
drjones
awesome use of selective colour and soft focus. Love it!
Simon Whittaker replied
Wow, thanks for that. I really appreciate the feedback. I have mostly done informal portraits til now but have started to expand creatively so I really, really appreciate the positive feedback.
Thanks!
drjones
You’re welcome. I think you’re going to come up with some stunners by expanding creatively- have fun!
Normf
Great responce to this photo Simon. Was the LensBaby used here to get the amazing DOF?
Simon Whittaker replied
Yep, been really happy with the response and yep that was with the lensbaby.
johnsphotoworks
I was going to ask if you used a lensbaby on this shot, then i read it on the right if the image. this is a wonderful shot.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you so much, I really appreciate the comment – especially considering the calibre of your work. Thank you.
Mohammad Khaksar
wow…what a great idea…bravo…bravo my friend…
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you so much. It is my first real still life so I am especially pleased you liked it.
reflexio
Love the story entwined in this photo.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that.
Duncan Waldron
This is interesting, Simon, especially with the angled approach to lift it out of the ordinary. Have you tried playing with the tones at all? I think you could do something with contrast here, or unsharp masking, to add a bit of punch. Try posterizing with just 2 levels, for a really graphic effect.
Simon Whittaker replied
Mate I am useless at photoshop. If it dont come fixed off the camera I am basically lost bar a bit of brightness and contrast. I’ll give it a try, it needs a bit of cropping too but once I take the shot off (even to edit) the comments history and any favouriting is lost too.
Duncan Waldron
You don’t need to remove the shot; you can either replace it (My Bubble – Art – Edit, then “Change this image…”), or just add a modified one in addition to the original.
Simon Whittaker replied
Oh, might give that a go then. Thanks for that.
Dragomir Vukovic
beautiful life
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Dragomir, this is really my first attempt at a still life.
Shannon Byous ...
Really tells a story. Good shot!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you Shannon, I am so glad you think so!
James Godber
Hey Simon, love the new avatar and wonder why I didn’t look at this image before. It’s fantastic…..
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much James, I really appreciate it.
Simon Whittaker replied
P.s. thanks for the favouriting too!
Steve Chapple
Very good outcome. The DOF works so well here, gives a focus on the centre piece of the image with a ‘story’ told by the other items. A top shot…..
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Stephen, I used a lensbaby as a DOF style vignette in a way, they’re a great little peice of equipment.
Meeli Sonn
Yes, it is good idea to express this way. The composition is great. The men can understand it even better…..
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you, I am very flattered.
Adam Spence
Very nice, great control of focal point, tone and contrast. Very engaging image.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you so much for the kind words Adam, its much appreciated.
Lois Bryan
spectacular with the short dof … to me it illustrates the confusion we always bring to puzzles … be they little pieces of colored cardboard or the ones in real life. The selective color of the whiskey (yes?) is hilarious … as it’s soooo much easier and more colorful in life to escape than it is to solve our fuzzy problems!!!!! Or am I reading too much into it???? LOL!!!!! Regardless, I LOVE it!!!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Lois! No, that was what I wanted to convey in the image, dark and lonely puzzle – life for some. The light caught my idea and I combined it with an old idea. Thanks for favouriting it too. MWAH!

Hi Simon,...”So don’t come knocking,
I won’t come out.
This depression is my deepest bout.
Just leave your message on the door.
As I call on Jim just one time more. “
I love the shot, it is perfect for the mood , and as I suffer depression I could have written these last words , as I hide at home quite a bit..even leaving notes on the door…..But darn, they blow off in the wind on occassions.
Very creative work with photo shot. I love it.

Cora Wandel
Wow, there is a writer in you! I thought of you and this group because JerameS submitted a photo this afternoon and I saw you commented on it, and I thought maybe there is a writer in you, too, and to my delight there is! Thank you so much for joining us. This is beautiful, both words and photo. – Cora
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you so much, I am so glad you told me about this group – its an inspired group with inspired people.
Anne-Marie Bok...

johnsphotoworks
I never get tired of looking at this picture. I just love the DOF.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks John, there are a few of my favourites I look at over and over and I’m glad I’ve been able to take a shot you like.
Wayne Pearson
Yes this image says so much, the lighting sets the mood as with the alcohol, and the messed up puzzle, sad (mood ) but very effective.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Wayne, I see lots of lonely people through work and it kind of reminds me of them.
faizee
nice work…
Simon Whittaker replied
Hey, thanks mate – I really appreciate it.
JudyBJ
I’ve looked at your entire potfolio and like it a lot,but this is real special and it goes to my favorites for sure
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Judy, I am glad to hear you liked this shot and thanks for the favouriting. I am hoping to expand my studio work in the very near future and start getting out a bit more.
JudyBJ
I’m looking forward to it ,also drooling over your camera, but hope to get the new 5D Mark ii soon
Simon Whittaker replied
Ha ha ha, one of my best friends (who is getting out of photography has loaned me the 1D, but I can’t tell you how desperate I am for the new 5D mkII, I hope you get yours too. Have you seen the test photos on DP review?
JudyBJ
yes i have and i’m shooting now with the 5D(very happy with it),so it can only get better, specially the dirt problem
Simon Whittaker replied
Absolutely!
Mohsen Bayramn...
This is just amazing! wow! love the way you compose it this way and your fine use of dof acts as a element for the composiion. also your control on light… very nicely done, and creative ;)
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Moshen, I am glad you like it. I used a Lensbaby for this shot and for “Vows” as well – they are such a great bit of kit.
Nicholas Richa...
Great tones again and the light and levels are just right. DOF really makes it. Lensbaby put to perfect use.
Simon Whittaker replied
Oh yeah mate they are really cool – so cheap and so effective. I have started using them on portraits too for something different. Thanks for the favouriting too mate!

Great work as I have commented before, it is an image that opens my inner self..good work Simon

Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Col, I lost the words to it when I added the framed picture to it but I am equally glad that it works without the words.
Sinéad Costello
I love this effect. Looks like just what I need right now too. Fab
Simon Whittaker replied
Ha ha ha – thanks for that. I suppose the irony is that the more you drink the harder jigsaws are to do.
lennylennylenny
this is gorgeous
love it
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much, happy New Year for ‘09 too.
Ken Mucke
A truly brilliant image..love how you constructed this shot….

Thanks Kathy, I’m glad you like it.
Colleen Milburn
Wow, this is brilliant – well done, indeed, Simon :-)
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Colleen, I really appreciate your kind words.

Perfect transfer of the moment. It takes a real man to sit down and do a puzzle. :) However, a stiff drink makes anything all the more interesting. Lovely work here. Specs are a nice touch.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks for the favouriting. I am going to have to disappoint you though – puzzles drive me mad, I rarely drink and the glasses belong to Mel !
PolarityPhoto
Awesome work. Well executed. I’d also like to add, nice work with the lens baby those things drive me absolutely batty. Nice touch in post processing as well.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much, I am so glad you like this. Does the lensbaby drive you batty in a good way not a bad way.
Stephen Rowsell
awesome, love the dof!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Steve, glad you like it. Bit of a personal fav. too.
mrscboretti
Wow- I feel quiet and lonely just looking at this shot! So much of your work exudes a certain feeling! Amazing talent you have!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Christine, that is so nice of you to say so – I am really chuffed!
jwinman
very nice and aptly titled still life.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks for that – and thanks again for the favouriting too. I am glad the intended atmosphere came thru.
Peter Zentjens
Such an emotive still life! Excellent work Simon.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks so much Peter, I work with the elderly often and find that this type of scene is repeated in various configurations – I am glad there is an emotional feel to it.
Trenton Purdy
WOW! This is fantastic.
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks Trenton, I really appreciate that.

Love this perspective and the mood. Well done. Congrats on the feature. Cheers, S.
