Hi Simon I prefer this one as the eye is drawnto the horse and rider and their reflection. the light is awesome ! beautiful capture Jane

  • Simon Whittaker

    Simon Whittaker

Thanks again Jane, I Prefer this crop too but its lack of mb due to the crop limits is saleability – in saying that I don’t really expect to sell anything so…...

  • Alexandre Bertin

    Alexandre Bertin

Hi Simon, i definitely prefer this one :)

I do not use the motor of my camera, I prefer one shot even if this one is not as good as I expected…

  • Jim DeMore

    Jim DeMore

I agree with the others Simon. This cropping give the subject room to ride forward and I can actually feel the horse and rider in action more so than the other picture.

  • Simon Whittaker

    Simon Whittaker

Thanks Jim, I was a bit thrown with the rule of thirds because of the bands for air, see and sky and the horses position. This seemed the most balanced.

  • Simon Whittaker

    Simon Whittaker

Thanks Alexandre and thanks for the previous email too. I should explain to you and Jim that my father was a press photographer, he won the Nikon award for best series of photos in 1969 (using the motordrive I think) but he told me when he started that his editor gave him only 1 or 2 shots (on an old manual loading camera) and said if he didn’t come back with a good shot then you were out of a job. I kind of feel there is a zen to taking deliberate shots fired at the right moment rather than the shotgun gun approach. So I’m glad to hear you say that.

Hi Simon – this shot def draws the eye more. I prefer it, great colour and composition and I wish my peak hour looked like that!

  • Simon Whittaker replied

It is a great peak hour, thanks for the comment.

  • Micki Ferguson

    Micki Ferguson

    I like this crop better

I know maybe it won’t work for some of the frames and such but for me and the picture it works best :)

  • Simon Whittaker

    Simon Whittaker

I think this is the best too. The original was my first sale so I have a sentimental place in my heart for it.

  • Von McKnelly

    Von McKnelly

This one for sure…it adds the sense of space.

A real feel good shot Simon!!

  • Simon Whittaker

    Simon Whittaker

Thanks for that – by the way, love your work and thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • EnVee

    EnVee

I like both of these shots! well done on both and what a beautiful sight :)

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks Nancy, I really both too for varying reasons. Briefly, I was told that years ago photographers only had a single shot at something like this and didn’t have motordrives which generate a better chance at a better image. Whilst I don’t have any reservations with other people using them I prefer to fire single shots only when the right shot presents itself – so I like the raw image for the zen and the cropped for the esthetics. Thanks again for commenting I appreciate it.

  • EnVee

    EnVee

    and i agree :)

  • Caroline Gorka

    Caroline Gorka

This is a much better crop…as the horse has space to travel into … only put a moving object right up against the frame if it part of the story you are telling.
    :)

  • Caroline Gorka

    Caroline Gorka

Also in a third….so compositionally easier on the eye. :)

  • Simon Whittaker replied

Thanks Caroline, am trying to do this shoot againsome time soon and am hoping to get a similar shot with better composition without cropping.

  • Caroline Gorka

    Caroline Gorka

    For the challenge ??

A good crop can make a picture, and be an art in itself…..but a bad crop can ruin it.

Simon, this one hits the nail on the head for me, it really hits home. This is a wonderful example of when words and photography can join together to make a very powerful statement. There is no way this message could be conveyed by the photo alone, the words are essential. What a treasure you are! – Cora

Impact (does it grab attention?): Yes
Composition (use of space, lines): Nice off center, horse riding into the frame, horizon a bit centered
Subject matter: horse riding on the beach, lovely
Focal point:the Sun, nice close to the silhouette
    Style (story):very good
Lighting: good choice to expose for the Sun. A bit HDR could bring out some more subtle details in the foreground
    Color balance:fantastic
    General:Wonderful image

I have a similar image ‘Dawn Rider’ but I like the depth of the colours in particular in your image and also the way the light reflects the wet perfectly flat sand on the beach. Brilliant indeed.

Thanks for that, I was lucky to get this shot. The girl had started to ride off the beach when I ran up and asked if she would just do a bit more up our end of the beach. The lucky part was the lack of a fatal heart attack on my part.
