Peak hour, North Coast NSW
This shot was taken on our local beach at around 7:30am. I like this shot in particular because at this time of morning people all around the world pack into trains, cars, trams, buses etc and here is this girl and her horse reclaiming that little bit of freedom most of us crave.

Els Steutel
beauty of a shot!!
Simon Whittaker replied
Thanks for that, I froze waiting for this shot. This was the first time I asked someone other than family to do a shot, the girl had finished riding and was leaving. I chased her for this shot and I’m glad I did. Thanks again forthe feedback.

Simon Whittaker
Thanks ;-)
Marc McDonald
Nice capture! Very tenacious of you to chase after this rider! Way to fight for a shot!
Simon Whittaker
Thanks Marc, amazing how good it feels to go and ask instead of wimping out and regretting it later like I normally do. Thnaks for taking the time to view the shot and read the story.
Robin Robb
Oh my gosh…. what a wonderful photo. Beautiful.
Simon Whittaker
Thank you Robin, As I said in the notes this is the first person I have asked for and directed their photograph and I guess this why I like this shot. I enlarged this to poster size the other week and it looks magnificent, I sold it privately a few hours later to a friend and the lady at the camera shop said a customer there wanted a copy too! Its not the money though, its the thrill.
Thanks again.
Phil Ryan

Simon Whittaker
I saw gum nuts on one of your photos so I assume you live here or have been here. It is wonderful having the quiet places and clean air. It makes such a change to packing in the public transport for work everyday.
Kathryn Potempski

Simon Whittaker
Thanks Kathryn, the rider was leaving the beach when I came up panting and asked her for the shot. I am so glad she said yes, this is one of my favourites. I am hoping to do some morning horse shots soon.

Alexandre Bertin
Hi Simon, first of all many thanks for the comments on my cello picture :)
This picture is really nice, the colors are amazing. A nice poster for those who like horses.
I would only regret that the horse is a little bit too much centered in the picture, i would have prefered it on the right of that picture to give more movement.
Anyway a very nice picture
Simon Whittaker replied
Tried the alternate crop. I find it a bit difficult because of the bands of air, water and sand and the horses relation to the three of them – what do you think.
Simon Whittaker
Thanks Alexandre – you know your stuff. I know what you mean, I have looked at the other images and there is an another image like this but the riders details are hidden in the Island. I have tried to edit the image to get a rule of thirds example but it loses quality and print size. Also, I am not one for using my motordrive, It is a great tool but I like taking individual shots because I feel that at times using motordrive is a bit like using a shotgun approach. Whilst I don’t mind others using it I don’t myself. (But I’m wierd). In this instance it cost me a better image I think so I am re-evaluating this stance.
Thank you for having the photographic integrity and tell me exactly what you think, I really would rather you write this response than telling me it is a great shot , many people have and I’m glad they like it but I must admit I would rather 100 of type of emails to be perfectly honest.
Thanks again Alexandre.
Claire Farley

Ozlem E
LOL!! Ahhh.. The public servant. My husband is a police officer. I know the feeling! I just work my 9-5, love my job but the grass is always greener…
Simon Whittaker replied
yep, its great fun – I have to cinfine my shooting to canons (cameras), although…....
Ozlem E
LOL! Have a great week!
Kaimarie
I think that this is a great shot, stunning colours…......I find this version more appealing than the second. beautiful =)
Simon Whittaker replied
Thank you so much. I like both images for a lot of reasons,I don’t use a motordrive so I like it because I shot it exactly when I wanted it rather than just reeling the shots off. I hope that doesn’t sound like photographic snobbery – it isn’t. In the old days you only one or two chances to get a shot and I like that feeling of shooting the same way.
Anyway – enough boring rubbish from me. Thank you especially for commenting on my work. I really like your work and it is a real compliment to get a comment from someone of your skill.
