Fantabulous Printmakers - A Plea!

I had a bit of spare time today so I thought I’d go through the artworks in my most favourite group of all time, “Printmakers & Printmaking”. It never ceases to amaze me what fantastic art there is in our world, and this small group of printmakers is no exception. There are only 15 pages of works posted, but what an exciting 15 pages they are! Printmaking doesn’t seem to be all that popular with those viewing artworks on RedBubble, and it seems these works are rarely on the feature pages alongside the bright and glorious digital artworks and photography, or drawings, which is a major pity because printmaking can produce really unique results. Printmaking requires a different set of skills and more often than not produces effects that artists would be hard-pressed to get (if at all) in other forms of artwork. Printmakers often work in black or monochrome, so perhaps this is what makes them less interesting to others – I don’t know.

After leaving a few comments on some of the works I particularly admired, I received a response from BillyLee. In her response regarding Sierra Woman she said it is not often people comment on black and white prints. I have noticed the same thing. Yet her’s was a very beautiful work of art that would have taken a great deal of time and effort to create. The detail she managed to carve into a woodblock, and the skill required to achieve such a relaxed and tranquil setting, is amazing. There are others in this group, equally brilliant. So I would love whoever reads this journal to take a trip into the Printmakers & Printmaking group and to give them all the credit they deserve.

Most of all, I would love to see the guru’s of RedBubble making some special effort to recognise and promote this unique band of artists. How about a feature page of printmakers’ works? How fantastic would that be!

It sure is a great talent you all have. I really admire your skills in this form of art. I agree you should be featured more often so people get a chance to really look at the effort that goes into these works!!!

Such good comments, Whirligig. I couldn’t agree more – print-making is different to all other art forms especially since the final outcome is unknown until the final printing and this totally adds to the excitement.
I would be great for RB to feature Print-making.

I agree with you and I hope RB takes the opportunity to introduce the printmakers works.

Here, here! We are but a small voice in a very large community!! Considering the greater community doesn’t even understand what printmaking is I think we all have to shout very loudly to be heard!!

Has anyone got a loud-halo! Perhaps we should approach the RB guru’s. As group leader, you may have more influence – my tiny voice just isn’t going to be heard over the din of other mediums. I doubt my little journal will even be noticed.

Great idea Whirli, I don’t think people appreciate the amount of work involved…you’ve got my vote;)

Wow, you have really mad me feel special, yes, yes they really do like me! (pretending to be Sally Fields). But seriously, thanks to your journal I have been getting some notice for my black and white print Sierra Girl and its nice that people are actually commenting on the detail and work. Not the colour and the glitz, well, because there is none. Imagine my smile when I pulled the press and then lifted the paper to see this in A2 Print. Weeks of carving and thinking and carving, were there in all their glory. Printmaking is exciting to me, it feels like a tradition, there is a rawness about it. Its the earth, the trees, the ink…..I can’t explain it but its so much more then I could ever explain. Thanks for writing this journal. Being on redbubble is so rewarding for an artist who is hidden away in a studio all the time….wandering whats it all about! Billy

I love the printmaking pages too and appreciate the reminder that they’re there.

I don’t check the home page often so don’t know how long the images stay there, but I’m sure the RB Elves could arrange something to show off your incredible artwork for an extended amount of time, at least a whole day!
