There are those lilies I like so much again! Beautiful!

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Thanks Mariaan. I guess they are very much part of my life – they occur naturally along the Cape coast, so there’s a spiritual connection for me, and they grow here in our yard in Australia, hence are easy resource material for me. I just love their beautiful shapes and lines, and I want them to be seen as beautiful subjects for artwork, not just as funeral flowers (as many people normally think of them).

Oh, this is fantastic. How did you achieve this effect?

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Thanks Marion. This is a monoprint. I used some left-over printing ink which was still on the glass inking plate, added a bit of blue and yellow, then drew into it with the back end of a thin paint brush, transferred the image to paper, and used the brush to work the (still wet) ink around the flower shapes to create a different texture there and to bring them out a bit.

These lilies are so wild at heart. Love ‘m. I really like the wildness in this one. The rich colours and textures and the subtle white lines: fantastic.

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

I love your comment, FlyBoy, and the way you see “wildness” in the image. This is a technique I really enjoy as it frees up my drawing style. I often resort to doing these sorts of monoprints whenever I feel my work is becoming too tight and controlled – which is often the case when I’ve done a lot of block work.

Love the colours in this one whirli

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Hi Helene, and thanks. Yes, I must say, I love using these earthy colours.

It is like jazz. Jazz musicians can play every composition note by note, but they love it when it is time to improvise and let things loose and free up their spirit for the next adventure.

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

You’ve hit the nail on the head with that description, FlyBoy – it’s exactly like that!

It is such a pleasure looking at your artwork, it gives strenghts and makes the mind wander.

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

That’s a really, really lovely compliment MaryO. Thank you so much for this feedback.

I love this Whirli! The texture is just so yummy! I’m sure it’s even more so in the flesh!

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Thanks Charlotte! That’s such a lovely comment. Spurs me on to try more, and to learn more.

Monoprint is my favorite kind of printmaking. I love this image. The texture and the colors flow so well together. Your work is fascinating! I love to see modern-day printmaking artists :)
