Haunting. Looks like anguish incarnate.

Love the lines around the nose and eyes, so simple to express a complex feeling with the eyes. Is it ink?
Elaine van Dyk
Hi kathleen. It’s an etching which I photographed, then just adjusted the colour balance and levels slightly to give it a richer tone.
Michael Douglass
Wow, did you do the etching as part of a course? Doesnt seem to be the type of process many people can do from home. An interesting medium which I’d love to give a go. Lot of work gone into this and the colour adds to the mood well, for some reason Im attracted to moody shades of brown in art.

...and Im glad to see some more traditional works on here rather than digital. Nothing wrong with digital mind you, just that I feel Im in the wrong place at times.
Elaine van Dyk
Thanks Kalb. Etching is one of my favourite mediums. I did 5 years part-time at RMIT – major subject was Printmaking. But I’m trying to incorporate my traditional work with some digital manipulation now – purely because I don’t have a lot of time to set up at home, and I have easy access to my computer in the evenings.

This is a very emotionally expressive image. It speaks of torment and sadness to me. I love your paintings. Didi you create them all yourself. Work very well done. I wish my painting was that good. Etching is great too cos you can normally keep the etch and do more variations of the same print. A good creativ investment.
Elaine van Dyk
Christian, thanks for commenting on my work. To answer your question, yes I did create it all myself, but obviously I get my ideas from external sources too. This particular piece was done at an extremely anguished time in my life, which thankfully is over.

This is great! Love the expression and feeling, it’s all in and around the eyes for me. Great stuff, can’t wait to see what else you produce..

This is an amazing piece of work, my friend!

Powerful image it gets me in the gut feeling. Nice work indeed !
Elaine van Dyk replied
Great to hear from you again, Cliff – thanks for that most encouraging comment!

A fine etching, Elaine, and wholly expressive of this emotion we’ve all felt.
Could be an unhappy earthbound spirit, lurking in an area of previous tragedy.
Elaine van Dyk replied
Colin, thank you so much for your feedback – it really is greatly appreciated.

This reminds me of some of the darker work of Joy Hester. I like it.
Elaine van Dyk replied
Wow, Phil…....Joy Hester’s work is amazing…...mmm, follows this would remind you of that sort of dark work – I did this during a personally pretty dark time! Strange too that at that time I went to an exhibition at the Heidi Gallery in Templestowe several times to do some reviews on her work. Still in awe of her work, but thank goodness I’m well out of that dark phase myself!!
