Sunny Heaven at Lysterfield 1

An exquisite, tiny, Australian ground orchid, so easily missed by passers-by.

Baluk William Reserve

I posed the question as to whether this is
Purple Beard OrchidCalochilus robertsonii
or
Red BeardCalochilus paludosus
and it seems from responses to be the latter. Thank you all who have helped me out here.

These little angels are no bigger than a ten cent piece, but are stunningly beautiful close-up.

Photographed at the
William Baluk Reserve, Victoria, Australia

This is of a very exquisite and subtle beauty. Love the soft white background and the vagueness of the green stalk. This image gives a lot of peace and tranquillity.

Nice view of this Beardie, showing good labellume detail. I think this one is actually Calochilus paludosus as it lacks the eye like glands normally present in C.robertsonii. They are really easy to walk straight past till you have your eye in.

ChrisRoss, thanks for the information – I’ll certainly look into that and change the details if necessary. The details I have were given to me by someone else. I just love to go out looking for ground orchids, but don’t have the expertise or depth of knowledge about their names.

They can be difficult to ID, there are a few field guides around, the Field Guide to the Orchids of NSW & Victoria by Tony Bishop is quite popular.

Lovely Elaine, haven’t seen one so open yet this year! No expert here, but this one looks like the Red Beard to me too “Calochilus paludosus”

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Hi Rosie – thank you so much for your feedback. Mmmm, there has been a lot of “umming” and “aahhring” about which orchid this is, but most seem to think it is the purple beard. Perhaps the lighting has made it redder than it actually is, I don’t know. I’ll have to get back there again one day when these are out and see if I can get more shots. However, I’d be over the moon if I could get definite identification from some experts! Meanwhile I’ll post both names and see what happens.

It’s not just the beard that does it for me but the red on the “cap” – never mind… where abouts in Lysterfield do you go?

    Definately C.paludosus Elaine.
    I like the limited depth.

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Thanks heaps for the advice Colin12 – I’ve been meaning to change that. Will do so now. Your feedback is really appreciated.
