Window Cat - Woodblock Print

Window Cat - Woodblock Print

Photograph of the original print.
January 2009
Size of original print is 22.5cm x 30cm

This is a reduction woodblock print which involved 6 passes (6 separate colour passes) and Chine Collé. A combination of oil-based and water-based inks were used.

First colour printed directly on Zerkall Etch 250g, with subsequent colours over Chine Collé (Japanese Tissue Paper used for the Chine Collé).

Because this was a reduction process, the original block is completely destroyed and no further prints can be run from that block. One Artist’s proof and one final original remain from this process.

The colors are very striking and the prominent black shadow adds a sense of mystery. Cats tend to blend into their environment, especially when hunting, which I feel you have achieved through the green face and and body shadow blend. The cats body also tends to mirror the vase, good work!!

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

Wow, a lot of thought and observation went into this feedback, hugo. I really appreciate that. Thanks heaps.

Thank you for your really lovely comment, Bernd. (I only wished I believed that much in myself – but I guess most of us lack some degree of self-conviction in the talent arena, otherwise we wouldn’t strive to improve!).

I love the fragmentary image; the Bird of Paradise flowers create stiking, vibrant shapes and the cat materialises, calm and aloof at the window. It all reveals itself with beautiful control.

  • Elaine van Dyk replied

What great critique from you, itzart – that of observation and insight. I really appreciate this sort of feedback so much. Thank you.
