Beautiful! Looks like a variety of humming bird, or a nectar eater! (Welcome home)
Elaine van Dyk replied
Thanks Sandra. I believe these are the African equivalent of humming birds. They’re really tiny.

Elaine van Dyk replied
Thanks heaps, Lynda…...yes, it is a truly beautiful species, and a lot of fun seeing them.
Elaine van Dyk
I’m very glad you like this one, JDNarts…....this is a pastime I take up when I don’t have printmaking facilities to make my images, or large blocks of time for printmaking.
Wendi Donaldson
Beautiful shot, Elaine! I think it’s like our hummingbirds here on the west coast of Canada – tho’ here they have a straight beak. Maybe nature has evolved their beaks out your way so they can find food – whatever they eat your way? Well done!
Stephen Colquitt
No wonder this is your favorite!
Elaine van Dyk replied
Thank you, Stephen!
luis ferreiro

WOW. Stunning shot. Beautiful. Think I will have to buy myself that ticket to South Africa!
Elaine van Dyk replied
Thanks for the feedback on this photograph, Mark. And yes, a ticket to South Africa will definitely reward you with many photo opportunities! Fabulous place…...I’m off on another 4-week jaunt around the Western Cape in a week’s time.
Vickie Burt
Great capture Elaine, and I agree with you. According to my book ‘The Complete Book of Southern African Birds’, it is a Greater DoubleCollared Sunbird, Nectarinia afra, and has a broader red band on its chest than the lesser of the same name. I love them, they are such busy, noisy little birds.
Elaine van Dyk replied
Thank you Vickie! I really appreciate you looking it up in your book, and confirming what it is. Yes, they are delightful to watch – hoping to see more of them at Addo next week!
Have now changed the description a little and hope you don’t mind me referring to you, and directing readers to your profile page in the process
SusanAdey
What a stunning bird. Great shot.
Elaine van Dyk replied
Thank you so much for commenting on this, SusanAdey.
Vickie Burt
I don’t mind, and thank you very much Elaine.
Macky
This is a winner Elaine, beautiful!! Very difficult to photograph right? I had fun and games with this particular species. :-)
Elaine van Dyk
Thanks, Macky. Yes, they can be difficult because they are so busy. However, I found that this little fellow kept returning to this particular flower stalk, and he had a pattern happening as he fed on it. So it was really just a matter of sitting and waiting, and taking hundreds of photos (and hoping no one disturbed him).
jesika
A beautiful bird beautifully captured

what a splendid capture, elaine! I’ve seen birds in Queensland called sunbirds but they are yellow with a purple throat. Same irridescence though!
Elaine van Dyk 16 days ago
Much appreciated nadine. They are truly magnificent creatures, and I was lucky enough to see 5 different types of sunbirds on my recent trip to South Africa. I’m obsessed by them! Unfortunately I didn’t manage to get good shots of the sunbirds this time around, only shots that will do as references, so I haven’t uploaded them.
