Kuan Yin And The Peacock Feather.
The story starts with Kuan Yin, the goddess of peace, tranquility and wisdom coming to Earth and showing the people the ways of love, brotherhood and charity. The people rejoiced and honored her and lived in harmony. Then Kuan Yin, having taught them the lessons returned to the heavens. After she’d gone the lessons she had shared began to deteriorate and ego once again ruled the world. Many who remembered her teaching cried out and prayed for her return. Hearing their cries she did return and gave them the pearls of wisdom that she was the keeper of and when the world was again at peace she returned to the heavens. But history did repeat itself and again she was called back by a few of her faithful followers. This time they asked Kuan Yin to stay with them in the world so that they could always see her beauty and be reminded of her peaceful teachings. Knowing she couldn’t stay with them forever she called to her a rather drab bird who’s only great feature was 100 long, dull, brown, feathers that made up it’s tail. She called on the magic of love and colored the tail feathers in bright iridescent colors of the rainbow and gave the bird a lovely crown made of bright feathers. Upon each feather she placed an eye. She held the bird up to the people and said, let this be your reminder of the beauty that lies in your heart of hearts and the teachings of peaceful ways. See these eyes are my eyes and know that I am here and watching. This is the story of how the peacock got it’s colors and why it was honored to become an icon for peace.
