Bubblenetters by Gina Ruttle (Whalegeek)

PHEW! This was a close call. Southeast Alaska’s humpback whales can put on outstanding cooperative bubblenetting feeding displays..sometimes at very close range! With all these open mouthed humpback whales lunging to the surface to gulp down herring, the poor little fish don’t have much of a chance.

Look closely at the open mouth of the humpback whale for a close up view of its baleen plates. Baleen whales such as humpbacks lunge to the surface, gulping their prey along with about 15,000 gallons of seawater. Closing their jaws, the whales squeeze out seawater, trapping prey such as herring or krill in the plates of baleen that line the tops of their mouths. One quick slurp of the tongue and then it’s on to the next mouthful of food.

wow this is such a thrilling capture!!! makes my heart beat just looking at it – m ust have been truly amazing to witness so close to these amazing creatures!

  • Hi, Maggie! Great hearing from you. The whales were feeding nearby. They dived and then the bubble netting calls began——VERY close. So close we could hear them loudly through the hull. Hold on. There was no time to move the boat. Then my husband shouted “Herring!” Next thing we knew, the whales rocketed to the surface very close to us. A close call indeed. What more can I say but that I love being around whales! :-)) All the very best to you from me!
