A rainbow appeared on the opening day of the Sitka, Alaska Sac Roe Herring Fishery on March 31, 2012. During Spring Pacific herring come together in immense numbers in order to spawn. Commercial purse seine fishing boats set nets to trap the thick shoals of herring. Stakes are high in this competitive fishery; with up to 50 fishing boats working in close proximity to each other collisions sometimes occur, meriting the fishery the moniker Combat Fishing. The golden herring roe is shipped to Japan where it is considered a delicacy.

Wow, the rainbow is fabulous! This would be a great shot even without it. Very informative writeup.

  • Hi Dot! Thank you very much. I have always wanted to experience this herring fishery. This year was the ticket. While the Sitka fishery is something unique to behold, the best part of the herring run is the wildlife that is attracted to the huge biomass of spawning fish. Glad to hear from you! Hugs, G

The rainbow is amazing, and all the colors are very painterly.

  • Hi, Betty! Nice of you to drop by for a look at the beautiful day that graced the opening of the Sitka herring fishery. The time I recently spent in Sitka was memorable for many reasons; the many rainbows added a little icing to the proverbial cake. Best to you, G

  • Hi, Kim! Thank you so much for your uplifting comments. Been away from the Bubble for a bit but it is good to be back in the saddle. That rainbow was so wide I was sure it had an ample pot of gold at the end but drat it, I never could find it…:-)) Best to you! G

Another adventure for sure! :O))) Love it of course! Glad to have you back friend,!
    Huggs, Linda

  • Hey, Linda! Thank you…it is good to be back. The fishery was fascinating to observe. The area in my photo was relatively quiet but across the water boats were crammed together like sardines with fishing nets all over the water. Pretty zany indeed. A humpback was feeding near where I took this photo. I can only wonder what they think of all the boat noise and hubbub. Eagles are thick where the herring are spawning. I hope the fishermen left enough herring behind to keep feeding the wildlife. Hugs, G PS Here’s to great outings with your whales this summer! PPS Is that you as a little girl in your avatar image? It’s a sweet photo.

Wonderful shot Gina, especially so with the rainbow. A very similar scene to what we see locally during herring spawn season and one that I dont think I will ever tire of!

  • Hey, Martin! Thanks a bundle! I saw two different SE Alaska herring spawn events this Spring and both of them were fascinating. What impressed me most of all was how wildlife was so abundant where the herring were massed. The herring are so critical to the survival of so many creatures, particularly after the privation of a long lean winter. Oh, I searched and searched but didn’t see one tattoo on an eagle or whale although there were plenty on the fishermen! :-)) Hugs, WG
