A polar bear (Ursus maritimus) sniffs the water for scents. Possessed of an excellent sense of smell, it is reported that polar bears can follow the scent of seals located twenty miles away. During Fall, polar bears congregate along Arctic Ocean beaches to scavenge food as well as await the formation of sea ice.
Below is a video I created of the polar bears of Kaktovik, Alaska….
The mirror-like reflection of the polar bear reminds me of the Greek myth of Narcissus, a handsome hunter who disdained the love and admiration of others. Finally Narcissus received his comeuppance when he was attracted to a still mirrored pool. Spying his own glorious reflection, Narcissus fell in love with his own image. Unable to part from the image he loved, Narcissus died gazing at himself.
A bit like Narcissus, I could gaze at polar bears without regard to time, losing myself in the moment.
Currently polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable. Threats to their existence include hunting and loss of habitat.
