A humpback whale explodes out of the water in very close proximity. This is part of the fun of whale watching; one never knows exactly where humpback whales will rocket out of the sea.

Hot off the press! The new Alaskan Humpback Whale calendar!

The following short video represents why I adore humpback whales. Please forgive my humble, awkward attempts to create video footage of the whales. I think I need a proper HD video camera plus a non-rocking boat in addition to videographraphy lessons. Next time I’ll stick to a DSLR but in the meantime, please enjoy this tribute to my favorite big beasties of the deep.

It is my sincere wish that visitors to my portfolio experience the beauty and wonder of nature. Moreover my hope is that my photographs will inspire viewers to be proactive toward the protection of wildlife and its habitat, those efforts ultimately making a far better world for all beings.

Lucky you Gina!! This is just incredible!! Fantastic capture!!

  • Thank you, Lisa. This whale had been breaching nearby but then took me rather by surprise with its close eruption out of the water. They are so much fun when they perform!

Awesome! You must have great reflexes.

  • Hi, John. Well, my reflexes could be much better…:-))) However, if ever in the company of a serial breacher whale, focusing on where the whale crashed into the water and then holding down one’s shutter button may provide great results when the whale flies out of the water again. Then you are somewhat prepared for the next breach.

Just how close were you! Yikes! I am glad (1) you are safe, and (2) you made this amazing and beautiful photo!

  • Hi, Betty! Oh we weren’t all that close but this whale did keep breaching in the general direction of our boat. Interestingly, while the following image was actually a bit farther away from the boat, to me it really looks a bit more intimidating, most likely because the following whale was breaching directly head on with our little boat. Take care, Gina

Amazing capture Gina. Why not Whalegeek anymore???

  • Hi, Ann. Thanks a bundle! As to the Whalegeek moniker, I’m still using it but thought it time for a change. Despite that, I remain pretty geeky when it comes to whales…:-))
