Golden Light On Inle Lake

Artist's Description

An Intha fisherman rows his dugout fishing boat across Inle Lake, Burma in the golden light of sunset.

Intha fishermen have a peculiar one-legged rowing style that to my eyes appears ponderous yet it is very efficient when done by these experts.

People living on Inle Lake have created stilt villages above the waters where local transportation is via dugout boats. In addition to fishing, ingenious floating gardens anchored by bamboo poles surround the tiny watery villages. In my eyes, these gardens were veritable works of art.

The fish trap used by this fisherman—-it is sitting on the boat to the right of the figure—-is placed on the shallow bottom of Inle Lake in order to trap fish. Then the fisherman uses a forked tool to impale any fish unlucky enough to be trapped in the bamboo fish trap.
