Sub-Antarctic Snares Island, New Zealand (located far to the south of NZ’s South Island). Weather, wind and waves favored us on our visit to this far flung island, allowing us to enjoy Snares penguins for the major part of one day.
While most people think of penguins as birds of the ice most species, like the Snares penguin breed where foliage and even trees thrive. Snares penguins breed only on Snares Island.
The Snares penguin is currently listed as a Vulnerable species, the main threat to the bird being finding sufficient food—-krill, their primary diet—-near their isolated breeding place.
