Polar Bear
Ever so curious, this polar bear is eyeing our little boat to see what we’ll do next. Extremely powerful muscles make the polar bear an expert swimmer. Using its forepaws to propel its body through the water, hind quarters just sail along behind the bear. Perfectly adapted to the Arctic, the polar bear reigns supreme over its realm.

whalegeek replied
Thanks, Linda. You are WAY too kind! Yes, there were over a thousand beluga whales up north. Amazing that there were so many. Photos were not so great since the water was so muddy but the whales were wonderful.

Barbara Burkhardt
be still my heart
whalegeek replied
Thank you for dropping by, Barbara. When we saw this bear in the water there was a brief heart stopping moment for a seal that popped up right behind the bear. Seeing the danger inherent in its position, the seal quickly exited the scene.

Hey, Miss Jenny! I hope you do see some polar bears. Come to Churchill, Manitoba in mid-late October for great polar bear viewing. This summertime bear encounter was indeed very lucky.

How thoughtful of you to write such kind words about this bear, Liane. That moment was indeed very special to me on so many levels. You have put it best…so cute and yet so deadly; that’s a polar bear for ya!
DebraLee Wiseberg
Outstanding series. It must have been a great trip and experience!
Debra
whalegeek replied
Thanks, Debra. This was indeed a good trip. Beluga whales were (naturally!) my ‘whale geek’ quest but polar bears are a close second. To see two of them particularly one at VERY close range during the summer was a treat beyond words. Glad you stopped by!

Leslie Battjes
wow! He’s amazing! I think I’d have been intimidated being in a small boat in the same water, though. Yikes!
whalegeek replied
No worries, Leslie, as long as the boat’s motor didn’t conk out. :-)) Thank you for stopping by to have a look at this big bruin!
Leslie Battjes
Good point! Polar bears are incredible and I’m a bit jealous that you had the opportunity to see some in the wild…what a breathtaking experience that must have been!
whalegeek replied
Leslie, I never expected to run into a polar bear on this expedition (I was looking for beluga whales, natch). Life is full of promise and unexpected encounters, hopefully most of them being fulfilling ones. Bless ya!

Thank you, Cindirelli. I agree with you that polar bears are indeed captivating and beautiful.
Vickie Emms
This is beautiful photography. I live in Manitoba and have never gone to see the polar bears :-(( I checked out the tours and can’t afford it now for this year after seeing Alaska and Yukon. This is definately on my list of places to go!
whalegeek replied
Hey, Vickie, I hope you get up to see the polar bears in Churchill (summers with the belugas are also swell and you may even get to see a polar bear such as this fellow that had just come in off the ice pack). You live in such a beautiful province. The prairies and tundra fascinate me. When I traveled there this summer, cultivated fields were full of yellow blossoms waving in the breeze. Extraordinarily beautiful! Some day I’d love to return to see the polar bears in October. Last time I was there was in 1992! There were only two tundra buggies at that time…now there are many operating. Have fun when you go and be sure to post photos on RB. Cheers, Gina

Outstanding shot, so good of him to pose perfectly for you! Just brilliant.
whalegeek replied
It’s amazing what animals will do for you in return for some potato chips. Just kidding! Thank you, Craig.
redtree
It’s like the Polar Bear is thinking, “Hello, Lunch” excellent capture.
whalegeek replied
You are probably quite right about the ‘lunch’ thoughts for this bear. I would not want to be a seal in the water near this bruin.
