    JennyDean

she’s a darling! love that fluffly coat :) wonderful capture.

  • whalegeek replied

Thank you, Miss Jenny! Buttercup was indeed a lovely bear, plus she was quite content to allow my husband, our guide and me to be near her while she munched on sedge grasses. I hope she has some cubs of her own now and that she is prospering.

  • Patty Boyte

    Patty Boyte

I think it should be Buttercup! What a brilliant shot. I love the color of her fur and the dry grasses in the background, just amazingly beautiful.

  • whalegeek replied

Thank you, Patty. I agree, she is Buttercup. Thank you for your kind comments, too!

oh heavens … looks entirely cuddlable and huggable though that might not be such a bright idea … but what a wonderful shot … !!

  • whalegeek replied

Isn’t that the truth, Bettina? Buttercup looks so sweet and adorable that a hug seems appropriate. I have a cast of one of her very large paw prints; unfortunately I think Buttercup would whack me with her paw if I approached her. I’m happy you enjoyed this “harmless” little fuzzball. :-))

    Ann Van Breemen

Love it. So sharp and clear you can even see the grass in her mouth.:)

  • whalegeek replied

Thank you, Ann. Buttercup, as well as the other coastal Alaskan brown bears were dining on tidal marsh sedge grasses, one of the first things bears dine upon after emerging from their dens in the spring. Berries would be next and then the great salmon runs would follow for feast time. I’ve tried some of the sedge grasses that bear eat. They were not bad and can really fill you up although I much prefer salmon, much as the bears do. :-))

Isn’t she gorgeous? No doubt she’s admired by the local males.

  • whalegeek replied

I hope Buttercup is faring well these days, 2BGood. Buttercup was a solitary bear, probably just out of the protective care of her mother when I met her. No doubt she became popular with the boys and may indeed have cubs of her own now.

Hey, I’ll trade you a couple of alligators for a few bears. It must be awesome to live where you can get photos of these guys like this. What a fantastic image. I was only in Alaska a few weeks, but miss it like crazy.

  • whalegeek replied

Okay, Margaret, you’re on. I’ll trade you a whale and a bear for an alligator or two. I wish I lived in Alaska, too. It keeps drawing me back for more experiences. I guess one could say I’m in love with the Great Land. Thanks for your comments!

  • Beve Brown-Clark

    Beve Brown-Clark

Fabulous portrait of this adorable looking bear…grizzley??

  • whalegeek replied

Yes, Beve, this is a grizzly bear although in Alaska the coastal grizzlies tend to be called brown bears. In the coastal regions where this is ample food--whether it be vegetative (grasses and berries), seaborne (clams) or the great feast of the salmon runs—the grizzly bears tend to pack on much more weight than inland grizzlies. They attain formidable bulk to say the least. Glad you enjoyed sweet Buttercup.

  • BornToRoam

  • A.M. Ruttle

    A.M. Ruttle

This image is FABULOUS! I love everything about it… the fuzzy space that Buttercup occupies in the frame, the texture of her fur (looks like I could reach out and sink my fingers way into that gorgeous coat, the grass framing her, and of course her fantastic expression! Then there’s your wonderful pithy comment! Delightful, and congrats on the well deserved feature!!!!!

  • whalegeek replied

Ain’t she cute? Buttercup is all grown up by now and possibly has cubbies of her own. I can only imagine that they are as adorable as she was at three years of age when this photo was taken. Don’t you wish you could give Buttercup a nice pet? Probably not a good idea but she’s so cuddly that one can dream. Buttercup is quite possibly the most beautiful bear I have ever seen. I wonder if she has relatives on Kodiak? :-)))
