Yellow Headed Blackbird
A male yellow headed blackbird near Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton National Park, USA.
Nesting amongst reeds in marshes, the yellow headed blackbird feeds on insects and seeds.
Migratory in nature, yellow headed blackbirds breed through the central United States into northern Canada. Winter grounds extend from the southwestern United States well into central Mexico.
Common among songbirds, the male is the one blessed with spectacular plumage while females sport drab black and brown feathering.
While the yellow headed blackbird is a flagrantly beautiful bird, it’s normal call is entirely non-melodic, raucous and harsh. To listen to the call of a yellow headed blackbird,

Jan Piller
Wow!! what an amazing shot! what a beautiful bird! Amazing how he’s got all that grass bunch up in order to perch on it. Very cool shot!
whalegeek replied
Jan, as lovely as this bird is, it possesses the most raspy, nonmusical call. Still, no matter. Yellow headed blackbirds are very, very beautiful. Thank you for stopping by to comment!
Scott Hendricks
Great capture of one of my favorite birds.
whalegeek replied
Scott, this was a treat for me to see one of these birds. Where I live I’ve only seen one male many years ago but they were abundant in the Tetons. Glad you liked this image!

wow what a stunning birdie, looks great with the grasses so bleak behind! love it!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, JennyDean. These are such gloriously beautiful birds but their call is raucous and non-musical. Obviously they were behind the door when sweet lilting birdcalls were passed out!
LTPhotography

whalegeek replied
Thank you ever so much, LTPhotography!
Jan Timmons
Gee. Once I began looking at photos I’ve missed here, I can’t stop! This is a gorgeous bird and a great shot! That vivid yellow is just remarkable! Do you use a monopod or tripod or just have incredibly steady hands? (Just curious – you don’t have to answer that.)
whalegeek replied
Hey, Miss Jan. I’ve been out of commission for a bit, diddling around Yellowstone NP doing some “combat photography.” Nice to hear from you again. This darn bird was a treat. Quite possibly this bird was saying “Nyha-nyah-nyah-nyah.” I had been trying to photograph yellow headed blackbirds at a wetland near Jackson to no good avail. Two days later I spied several of them sitting near a parking lot in Grand Teton NP. This was one of them, obviously uncaring about the everyday presence of humans and willing to pose. I have been using a tripod more and more when possible but this particular day was a grab and go type of photo. Since the sun was bright and the bird was close at hand, I was able to achieve a rather crisp image of this particular bird. No steady hands here, just cooperative sunlight and avian specimens!
dinghysailor1
superb – outstanding bird capture with such a beautiful setting!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, dinghysailor1! For once a bird didn’t settle with a piece of grass or a twig in front of its face. :-)))
Sandy Stewart
Very nicely taken! : )
whalegeek replied
Thank you so very much, Sandy. This bird and its friends were extraordinarily cooperative. Fancy that!? You do such wonderful work with things that flit off into the wild blue yonder that I’m sure you can appreciate how nice it was to have a subject that posed as if it was paid to do so.

Thank you Dave and Trena for your kind words!
zumi
Beautiful bird (never seen this kind of blackbird) and great capture!!!
whalegeek replied
Zumi, thank you. Yellow headed blackbirds are indeed beautiful but they are a royal pain when it comes to being aggressive to their more timid, marsh-dwelling cousins, red winged blackbirds. Still, I can’t help but appreciate their beautiful feathering. Thanks for stopping by!
springbob
wildlifes my bag baby and this is a great capture

Lynda McDonald
kerthump ! excellent capture and a gorgeous bird,,,,,,,,,,,we do not have these ones
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Lynda for your comments. Frankly, I have only seen one of these birds near where I live although I admit to not being a keen birdwatcher. Perhaps others call my neck of the woods home but I just don’t see them.
Glenda Remaklus
What a gorgeous bird. I wish that Indiana had these!
whalegeek replied
Glenda, so nice to hear from you. No yellow headed blackbirds in Indiana? Frankly I’ve only seen one in Illinois where I live. Despite being so striking, I’m not a huge fan of these guys since they tend to be pretty spiteful to their beautiful cousins, red-winged blackbirds.
Susan Gary
a lovely capture!

Susan, thank you so much!
