Phill Danze
Amazing shot – just stunning – the movement of the water around the whale is nicely captured.
whalegeek replied
Thank you, PhillDanze, for your thoughtful comments. My original posting of Dancing With The Waves brought many comments that I finally placed the entire breaching sequence into my portfolio…I NEVER can resist a chance to share whale photos!
I just had a look at your portfolio once again. Thank YOU for sharing your photos of Antarctica with all of us. Also, NZ’s sub-Antarctic island photos bring back cherished memories. Your skua on Macquarie Island is terrific.

whalegeek replied
Aren’t whales the cat’s meow? Never a dull day around them. I’m happy you enjoyed this magnificent humpback whale. I’ll never forget the wonder I felt when watching this whale’s breaches.
Jenni77
Simply amazing shot
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Jenni77. This particular series of breaching humpback whales is quite possibly my all time favorite series of photos I have taken.
Franklin Lindsey
I was wondering what platform you where on when you took this amazing action shot. Marvelous job.
whalegeek replied
Hello, Franklin. Glad you enjoyed this photo of the breaching humpback whale.
The photo and the others in the series was taken on the rear deck of a “28-foot diesel-powered aluminum Sea Master cruiser, Island Dream.” The quote is taken from the website description of the vessel on the Kaleidoscope Cruises website. Captain Barry Bracken commands the six-guest boat from Petersburg, Alaska. My husband and I spent several days searching for whales in the whale-rich waters of Frederick Sound, Alaska, a paradise on earth for this particular whale geek. Captain Barry is a former marine biologist with an encyclopedic knowledge of marine wildlife. I highly recommend Captain Barry’s operation.
We had been following this humpback for a long time, watching it as it repeatedly breached or lazily slapped its pectoral fins. I captured many images of this jubilant whale but my favorite ones are in the series Dancing With The Waves.
Auntymazza
Magnificent
whalegeek
Thank you, Auntymazza. This series of whale photos comprises some of my favorite images as well as lifetime memories.
Ellen
How beautiful!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Ellen. This whale possessed such grace and joie de vivre…I still get goosebumps looking at this series of images.
Andrea Searle
Wow you are very lucky, I bet this is an experience you’ll never forget! Thank you for sharing it with us!
whalegeek replied
Andrea, this certainly is a moment I never will forget. It is imprinted on my soul. That was one “whale” of a day to be out on the water.
Stephen Thomas
WOW! AWESOME CAPTURE!
whalegeek replied
Stephen, an appreciative thank you to you! I had a look at your portfolio. You have such beautiful images of your neck of the woods. Very evocative and peaceful, particularly the landscapes of the prairie. I’m passing through WInnipeg in July for more whale geek experiences farther north. I’ll have to check out that beautiful prairie. Since I live SW of Chicago I have a deep appreciation for the wide open spaces of cornfields and prairie. Guess it’s in my blood! Thank you again.
Jolie
What a beautiful being you’ve captured!
Stunning work & what excitement and thrill this adventure & photographing must have been!!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Jolie. It is indeed exciting to see whales behave as this one did. I can’t get enough of them. Heading back to Petersburg, AK this summer for more whales. It’s a special dream of mine to spend time amongst my beloved whales. So happy you enjoyed this exuberant animal!

Mark Maloney
Stunning I love the water flow
whalegeek replied
Mark, isn’t it amazing how the whale’s body sheds water while breaching? They are so streamlined…it’s a wonder to me that a creature this huge can be so graceful when surging out of the water.
Babcia
WOW…fantastic!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, Babcia!
Heather Rivet...

whalegeek replied
Heather, that was sort of how you could describe me after spending this particular day with this particular whale. Of all the days I’ve been out on the water with whales, this one day will remain in my top five whale watching experiences.
Robin Webster
This is absolutely fantastic! An instant fave! What an exciting moment that must have been for you!

Ann Van Breemen
This is an amazing shot. One to be really proud of. I love the way you’ve captured all the water drops too. I do love these huge creatures. I watch them every year from my unit balcony as they swim up and down th coast on their annual migration. Hopefully this year I can actually get a photo of them. You have inspired me to go out on a whale cruise this year for sure.:)
whalegeek replied
Ann, thank you for your thoughtful comments. How wonderful it must be for you to live so near to whales. I don’t know how far Gold Coast is from Hervey Bay but that’s a wonderful place to watch whales off AU. A fellow Red Bubbler, Wilparina has posted some incredible whale pictures from there. He works with the whales so maybe you can go out with him.
Tanya Snowden
Amazing shot! Such majestic creatures aren’t they! I’m actually going on a whale watching boat tomorrow, your photos are making me more excited!
whalegeek replied
Oh, how I hope you had great luck with the whales and that they performed for you! Wishing you whale karma, TanyaS!

Can’t believe I haven’t commented on this one… thought sure I had… must’ve been one of those
millions of interruptions…. like… it’s low tide and the beach asparagus is just right for picking. lolthis is just such a perfectly timed capture! I love the way the water is flinging off in arcs from his flukes! It’s just MAGNIFICENT!

whalegeek replied
Hey, Miss B! Man, I’ve been out of RB lately….VERY behind in answering people. I confess that I do not know why your congratulations are being offered. DUH! Did something happen when I was away? Are you home? Home a week now and can’t get back into gear. My heart remains with the whales. Thanks, Barbara for your congrats. Will you tell me what that’s about???
:-)))
Barbara Burkhardt
This image won the challenge … 7 Votes (Alaska BYD) Yeah !!!
whalegeek replied
Thanks for the heads up, Barbara. Yikes, I’ve really been out of the loop. I wondered why there were some out of the blue comments on Dancing #2. Your whale breach was also darn good. I’m surprised there weren’t more entries in that challenge though. Still on my Alaska high. Can’t get my head back to Illinois just yet. I don’t know how you’ll do it either, kiddo.

whalegeek replied
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Gallo, do you always spread sunshine like this? You made me smile. Tomorrow I will be out with my favorite marine mammals once again. Lots of fluke identification and photography will be going on. Yet the best part of it all is simply being in their company, hearing them breathe and savoring time amongst great whales.
