Dancing With The Waves

This always brings a smile to my face. A breaching humpback whale shot in Frederick Sound near the southeast Alaskan fishing village of Petersburg.

Despite growth in humpback populations around the world, the species is still considered endangered.

WOW,......perfect timing for a spectacular action capture of this Humback Whale! : )

  • whalegeek replied

Thank you all for your kind comments. It is humbling to receive others’ praise. You all have my deep appreciation. While it sounds corny, it makes me happy to be able to share my fascination with whales with other like-minded people. A day spent with whales is always a good one!

Some notes about this particular humpback whale: notice that its pectoral fins are white on both the upper and lower sides of the flipper. This was somewhat unusual to see in a northern hemisphere humpback.

The magnificent whale in this photo was a true performer, breaching repeatedly in series of four or five breaches in succession. The whale would then take a resting series of breaths before doing a power dive—-fast, steep and with purpose. The performance went on for several hours only broken by some lazy periods of pec slaps while the whale lolled on the surface.

For those of you interested in capturing images of these breaches, look for power dives and the direction in which the humpbacks make them. Chances are that within a few moments you’ll see more of this exciting behavior as humpbacks have a habit of breaching repeatedly.

    All the best,
    Whalegeek

Such power and grace. This is a beautiful capture with an insightful commentary. I must look at more of your work.

  • whalegeek

    whalegeek

Thank you, Jan. I am honored. Whales are a passion of mine.

Whale behavior, particularly that of humpbacks always offers new surprises. The more time spent on or even in the water with them--yes, one can snorkel with humpbacks!—brings opportunities for photographs.

One never knows what will happen while out whalewatching. For instance, the day prior to encountering this humpback was a fairly routine day. There were many whale tails sounding for the depths at distances not conducive to capturing anything great on the camera. Abundant whales in the area were more intent upon feeding than showing off. Next day however, the whales were very active, performing acrobatic maneuvers again and again. For years I’ve been taking photos of whales doing their thing but on the particular day this photo was captured, everything came together particularly well.

Why do they breach as the whale in the photograph is doing? No one knows for certain. Some biologists surmise that breaches are an attempt to dislodge whale lice from their skin. Still others think the relatively slower moving (compared to the “Ferraris” of the sea, blue, sei, Brydes’ and fin whales) humpback whales may breach to knock barnacles off their skin. I have seen groupings of over a hundred humpback whales feeding on huge schools of herring, many of them breaching frequently over the period of several hours. Perhaps these whales were excited by the amount of food they encountered and breached as a signal to other whales to join the feast with some cooperative bubble feeding. Who knows? I prefer to think that whales breach simply because it’s so darn much fun!

Enough of the whale lecture. What makes me content is that this photo has brought enjoyment to others.

Thank you, Louise. I only WISH I could see whales like this on a regular basis. Actually, for a person who is so nutty over whales, I live smack dab in the middle of the USA. Yet second to my admiration for whales, Alaska is a place that keeps drawing me back. Thanks to a kindred spirit for whales!

  • zumi

    zumi

You were luckier than me then (with the whales). I love your animal shots! Amazing moments, right? And thanks a lot. I love the Rockies and the Canadian/Alaskan wilderness. Just can’t get enough of it!

  • whalegeek replied

Couldn’t agree with you more, zumi about being in the out of doors with magnificent animals in spectacular settings that take one’s breath away. Whales can be very difficult to photograph. On the particular trip that produced this series of shots a couple of the eight-hour days on the water were kind of blah with just whale tails and not much else going on. Two of the days were fantastic, yielding great photos as well as experiences being with the whales. One never knows when the whales will turn on and put on a show. My husband and I are headed up to Petersburg, AK this August for more looks at whales and assorted wildlife. We’ll see what we can see. The way I look at it is, any day spent on the water with whales is a good one!

  • zumi

    zumi

I agree with you. Nature is magnificient! I will bear in mind this place called Petersburg as we are planning to return to Alaska very soon. Thanks for the tip and good luck!

  • whalegeek replied

Good on ya, zumi! If I can be of any help to you in answering questions, please feel free to contact me. Petersburg is one of my favorite tiny Alaskan fishing villages. It has everything going for it; glorious mountains, a picturesque working fishing harbor, excellent rain forest trails on the island, nearby LeConte Glacier (I have kayaked the fjord, been on a great small boat trip in the fjord and flown over the glacier—-it is spectacular and all these excursions are recommended) and superb whale watching from a tiny fleet of small six-passenger whale watching boats. The best whale watching near P’burg is late July to mid-August. Book accommodations and whale watching early as they tend to fill up quickly with return visitors. One note: you mentioned that you may be returning to AK soon. This year you may find some great deals since our bum economy is hurting the travel industry in Alaska.

If you wish to have some up close and personal bear viewing, there are many places I can suggest for you as well.

Hope you have a great journey when it all comes together for you!

  • zumi

    zumi

Thank you very much for the interesting information. I see that P’burg lies “near” Juneau where I intend to go too. But I know there are no road routes there. How can you get to P’burg? But when it comes to it, I will be asking you more questions… LOL.

  • whalegeek

    whalegeek

zumi, P’burg is serviced by ferries which may help you. They run on different days of the week so check with the Alaska Marine Highway System for schedules. Also, Alaska Airlines offers daily service from Juneau if the ferry schedule does not fit into your travel schedule.

Have you thought about Wrangell, too? It’s a short distance from P’burg via ferry or Alaska Airlines (a 15” flight where you don’t even rise above the mountaintops on either side of the jet) and has AnAn Creek nearby, which is superb for watching both brown and black bear fish side by side when the salmon are running. Check that out on the web, too. I have only been there for one day’s visit but regret that I did not take more time last year in July. It was extraordinary. Any help I can offer you, I am at your service! I love spreading the word on less-traveled Alaskan destinations far from the madding crowds.

What a beautiful capture. Gorgeous shot. Whales are so beautiful…when I loved in CA, I missed the chance of going on a whale watch…I am still kicking myself. :-)

  • whalegeek replied

Sadly, there are no whales in Lake Michigan either--Booo. I live near Chicago and sometimes wonder what I’m doing here without beloved whales nearby. :))) Anyway, thank you for your supportive comments. I hope you get to see whales some day in the wild. Nothing quite beats the exhilaration of a breaching whale in mid-air. Keep up your good work, too. You have a keen eye for unusual imagery as well as a fine appreciation for color.

  • whalegeek replied

Thank you, Gail! Oh, how wonderful it must be living so near eagles. Have you ever been out to watch the orca and humpbacks near Port McNeill/Telegraph Cove? Gads there are some wonderful cetaceans near your neck of the woods.

Yeah…I do miss sea life…that is one thing I had a lot of when I lived in Cali…lake Michigan offers none of that, but there is beauty here. Just no sea life as far as seals, whales, dolphins… :-)

  • whalegeek replied 19 days ago

Jen, I hope you get out to see whales and photograph them. It takes much patience and often a steady set of hands while on a pitching deck. Sometimes one gets lucky with calm seas and a cooperative whale or two as this beautiful dancer was. Thank you for writing such positive thoughts.

Gorgeous. I like the title too. Reminds me of my disco days when I’d ask people to dance just because I like to dance. They’d always turn me down. Tiring of that I danced alone joyously! Congratulations on your feature in the Earth Keepers group
