... great picture and light!!
whalegeek replied
Taking that photo from the back of a lurching camel was “interesting.” Despite the lumpy gait of the camel, it all managed to come together. Thank you, mc27!

Great Job!!
whalegeek replied
Brian, thank you for your comment. I got a kick out of you living near the Spam capital of the world. My dad survived on Spam during WWII. I don’t like Spam at all until I had nothing more to eat other than Spam and scrambled eggs during a very nasty typhoon.
Enough reminiscences…you have a fine eye for color as witnessed by your portfolio entries. Love that fiery watertower sunset!
Barbara Burkhardt
YES YES YES … Pleased you have been on the sand here too. Beautiful shot.
whalegeek replied
Hello, dear Barbara. Someday I hope to return to Cable Beach in a less jet-lagged state of mind. Frankly I’m surprised I didn’t fall off the camel’s back as I rode along in a time zone fog! It’s such a special, uniquely Australian place.
Karen Tillotson
Wow…what an incredible image…fantastic portfolio….you are soooo talented!
whalegeek replied
Thank you very, very much Karen for your vote of confidence. Most kind of you to write.

love your work!

Thank you, auntydakine!
George Link
Very beautiful moment captured and the horizon is nice and level.
whalegeek replied
Thank you, George. It was ever so difficult to level the horizon when lurching along on top of a camel’s back. Egads, I’m amazed anything even turned out on this photo at all considering the unsteady gait of my mount.
Marilyn Harris
Congratulations on your very deserving features! Brilliant capture! Must go there one day! :o)
whalegeek replied
Oh, Marilyn I sincerely hope you go to Cable Beach some day…promise me you’ll spirit me away in your suitcase when you go, okay? Thank you ever so much for your support!

camel back in australia near the ocean

whalegeek replied
I have to laugh, gabryshak…the scene is indeed rather romantic but lurching around on a camel’s back definitely is NOT. Thanks for your kind comments.

Rany Lutz
Perfect light!
whalegeek replied
Ramy, thank you. I was very fortunate to fire this shot off in that beautiful light. From my perch on top of a lumbering camel, it was rather difficult to keep my camera from jiggling. Should have a word with that camel about that!

I finally made it though all your current art. This has to be one of my favorites among many compelling works. The light, shadows, water and of course the camels, work together in this one to draw the eye all around.
And no, I didn’t manage my brother’s challenge last month though I did take around 800 photos and some of them are not bad. I am working on improving my sense of level now. I hate to have to correct the horizon in editing. And of course constantly working on whites and dim lighting conditions.
I really enjoyed all your photos though, you have had some great travel experiences.
whalegeek replied
Loisb, you have written such kind words…thanks for the big lift today! This is one of my favorite images due to the colors as well as the memories it evokes.
You and me both when it comes to keeping horizons level. I seem to have a tendency to slant horizons so I’m always working on that. Watching whales, this can often be a problem when on the deck of a pitching boat.
When you mentioned working on whites in your photography, do you use custom white balance? Many people just correct white balance in Photoshop but I prefer getting the color correct when I take a photo, thus I use a custom white balance as much as possible. I use a convenient Expodisc; it’s a fancy, convenient gray card. Perhaps you are already doing this but I thought I’d mention it just in case you wish to look into this more. Expodisc info is on the web.
Take care!
Loisb
Believe it or not – I don’t have Photoshop so I have to get it right – g. When I am using the tripod I have a bubble level I got at a camping supply store. Whites have always given me a problem, I just have to learn how much change to set it for and haven’t been retired long enough to get in all the practice I require. Hence the 100 a day challenge. Still haven’t quite figured out bracketing. Just too many things one can change around on these DSLR’s.
whalegeek replied
Good luck with your experimentation, lois. I don’t use Photoshop nor even know how to use it but rely on the simple fix its in Apple’s iPhoto. That being said, I am a firm believer in getting it right the first time so as to reduce editing time. The more you play with your camera’s settings, the more natural it will feel. Do look into setting custom white balances as that will make a huge difference in the color you achieve in your images. Have to run….an early morning departure for more whaling awaits. Keep on adding to that 100 a day challenge. You rock!
kellimays
OMG! This is AWESOME! Love this shot! You sure seem to be in the right spot at the right time. Loved looking at your photos! Thanks for sharing!
whalegeek replied
Thank you, kellimays! This was a fortunate moment…that darn camel I was sitting atop kept rocking about as well as lurching at the most importune moments. It’s amazing to me that this image even worked out considering horizons were rocking all over the place and the photographer was being bounced all over.

Still one of my ALL TIME Favorites in RB!!!!!!
