Tai Chi Garden, Hong Kong Park
This is not a quiet place, but somehow incredibly tranquil. It sits atop Hong Kong park, next to a wondrous aviary. Tai Chi Garden is a large area with small portals and windows of differing shapes, strange rock structures and a memorial to a few of the medical staff who gave their lives to fight SARS.
Towering bamboo helps the garden feel shaded from strong sunshine which gives a secluded feeling whatever time you happen there. Heavy in energy and ambiance the secluded feeling of the garden is in such stark contrast to the busy Hong Kong below that one reacts with calming emotions which in turn cause one to stop and meditate upon ones thoughts. It is an impulsive reaction that comes in much the same way as one would squint if a bright light were shone in ones eyes, or sharply pull ones hand away when unexpected touching something hot.
Clearly creating such a place is strong in the Chinese heritage of Hong Kong. Knowing that someone created this place to evoke the feelings it does makes its power all the more seductive, as if there were some calming spell especially created for all such gardens. The changing portals that one wanders through give the feeling that one passes magically through all such gardens, although, perhaps one can only leave from the garden through which one entered, in many ways like a dream I suppose.
