fORMaTiNG YOuR TeXt
I havent been having too much fun gettin my text written in RB the way i am used to.. formatting that is..
ive had my text cancelled out like this when i put the ”-” symbol between letters – i try and remember not to do that again.
Only just now i found another one.. So i thought to self, that i’d better write all these down here in the journal – for future reference :
- NEW PARAGRAPHS
Press ENTER twice and that will give you a new paragraph automatically.
WHEN ON EACH END OF WORD/TEXT :
eg: * bold * (without spaces)
symbol * = bolds
symbol _ = italic
symbol ^ = small upper
symbol – = cancels you out!
symbol ~ = makes text smaller
symbol + = Underlines the text
symbol * * * = makes a horizontal rule/line without the spaces
-found by KSERIPHYN_
- TO MAKE TEXT CLICKABLE (INTO URL)
Put quotation symbols ” ” on each side of the word/sentence you want to make into Links/Clickable and then a COLON (no spaces) straight after, plus the url ; http://
EXAMPLE (i’ve added spaces in between the symbols so that you can see the text – but NO SPACES
” This tip was found whilst reading PDUV’s journal ” : http://www.redbubble.com/people/pduv/journal/show/4812
becomes :
This tip was found whilst reading PDUV’s journal
- TO ADD GRAPHICS INTO YOUR JOURNAL
PLEASE DON’T PUT HUGE PIX, RESIZE/UTILIZE PLACES LIKE IMAGESHACK free image hosting
EXAMPLE : (i’ve added spaces in between the symbols so that you can see the text – but NO SPACES)
becomes

TIP : You can do save that gif cheat sheet if you want ;)
- ADDING GRAPHIC & MAKING IT CLICKABLE (LINKED)
for larger pics you want to show, its a good idea to post the Thumbnail size,
and making the graphic clickable to a larger size.
To to that just add the :http://website.uwant.url right after the ending exclamation ! mark of the graphic link
! http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/6817/formatingrbct6.th.gif !:http://img216.imageshack.us/my.php?image=formatingrbct6.gif
becomes
- HEADER TEXT (Large fonts)
add symbol # to each side of the word/sentence for header size font. /
but this seems to work only as header, meaning its gotta be the first sentence/text, like a header. i used it up to in the text that says “Formating Your Text”
eg : # Is bigger better? # no spaces
MAKING BULLET/LIST
Make new/update CheatSheet soondone!- New Cheatsheet added to bottom of this page and also in portfolio HERE
symbol hAsh plus a space then text will make bullets
-found by KSERIPHYN_
TEXT GENERATOR
- keong has found this link to TEXTISM a Text Generator that can help you further with formating style that RB uses.
For anyone who uses Firefox and has Greasemonkey installed, Dave Pearson has created a script that replaces the existing hints on RedBubble with the cheatsheet

Thanks fot this webgrrl. We really, really are going to get around to helping the writers more. And that irritating thing with the line breaks will also get fixed. Everybody is as busy as tick with stuff at the moment but it is on the list.

WOW Great tips!! I wonder for those of us that use Firefox with GreaseMonkey …. if anyone has actually thought of making scripts that could make all this a lot easier and even allow us to customize our pages somewhat? Boy, one thing I can’t wait for is either RSS on our pages … or email notification of comments and replies.

FYI, folks. These formatting codes seemed vaguely familiar, so I did some poking around.
At first I thought it was a system called Markdown (Wikipedia), but after more research, I now think it’s more likely to be Textile
Can anyone at RB confirm this?
If it’s true, then you can all refer to the official documentation and stop guessing! The textism site also has a handy testing area so you can try your comments out before committing them to RB :-) At least this is a workaround until comments can be edited.
Given that RB is apparently implemented using Ruby on Rails, they’re probably using RedCloth which also supports ‘Markdown’.
BTW RB, perhaps in addition to the “Show text formatting help” link, there could also be a link to the Textile documentation for reference?
Phew! That’s enough
hackingsorrycomputer programmingI mean, software engineering for today (it is the weekend after all, and I do enough of that at work already!)webgrrl, 11 months ago
Keong: Even with my 12 years of semi geek lifestyle and lingo, a lot what you wrote went..
“Whoooossh!! What? Markdowns? Is there stuff on Special here in RB at the moment? How much is the discount?”
“What, we gonna have Textile here soon? Woohoo.. custom made material by the metre!! “
hehehehe.. and i can assure you that plenty of the community in RB dont know about HTML, CSS, PHP, Wiki, etc … and they prob dont really care either.. Which is fine, since this place is about Art and Creativity, and not codes, and techy stuff..
And i made this original post in MY JoURNAL tis for my own reference – and it grew from there….. but i dont want the comments in My Journal be filled with ‘code/documentation’ stuff… RedBubble has the FORUM for that… Hope thats ok, n can respect that (tis after all my diary/journal space yah?)
Im sure when RB implements the Edit Button – everybody and everything in the format land will be all happy.. cuz we then can make mistakes and delete and try again (and learn)
till then i promote the KISS method (Keep It Sweet & Simple)
*MwaaaaH!
;)

keong : i will add the textile link into the main journal though.. so those who wish to further their knowledge may find it easy :) Good stuff on the detective work!

webgrrl—can you remind me how to add a link to an image, please?
I know it’s “exclamation points” at either end of the image, but cannot determine how the link is incorporated.
Thanks in advance.
webgrrl, 10 months ago
its a : (colon?) right after the exclamation mark and then the URL.. no spaces..
so thats,

Have to admit that I may not have read the above carefully enough, but is there a way to put text next to a picture /graphic? E.g., putting a picture (width 250) in the journal and then putting the text beside it, rather than have it automatically slot in below the picture?
I have used photoshop to make a jpg 500 wide; put the picture on the left or right and added the text to the picture. That does not seem right but is the only way I can do it here, at the moment.
webgrrl, 7 months ago
ah, you mean to align your image left, right etc? Im not that sure how to do that.. but if you make a ‘table’ you might be able to do that…? Then you put the image.. in one cell and the text in the next cell?
Incognita, 7 months ago
webgrrl … I hope they’re paying you because this is exactly what the rb team need to have in a faq… (the ellipses are instead of hyphens : I really wish they’d find another formatting language that doesn’t rely on common communications symbols)
Thanks again!

Can someone tell me if there is a way to make returns in your description please. I usually use / as a return in coding symbols but that is giving me a slash mark. Any suggestions? I’d appreciate any help.
Another questions is how can we make text larger and links bold and large.
Robin Fortin IPA, 6 months ago
Awesome… Thanks so much for the fyi. much appreciated
mlgkats, 6 months ago
thanks i was wondering how you did that
webgrrl, 6 months ago
Cheriperyy : what do u mean by ‘returns’ ?
to make links bold, you should be able to add the asterix before and after the word, and that should work.. Lets try : MAKING LINKS BOLD

I meant putting multiple spaces between lines in your descriptions so that it isn’t single spaced between paragraphs.
By: Cheri Perry, 3 months ago
I’m testing adding an image to a comment or somewhere in my descriptions..it hasnt been working so I will try it here again. Thanks for everyone’s help.
Ok let’s see if this works.
By: Cheri Perry, 3 months ago
Nothing happened. Am I supposed to be putting and ! before and after the link to that page? What I am trying to do is what I’ve seen many others do and that is to add the laminated print in a comment right after I upload it or also in my profile or description. HELP!
I’ll try it as I saw it written here above with
: with the coon after it this time.
By: Cheri Perry, 3 months ago
Still nothing…..what am I doing wrong?? I put !the link!:
By: Cheri Perry, 3 months ago
Now I am having a problem with first of all the images are too big. Is there something I need to do to make them fit in the description? Also
I’m still trying out how to put spaces between paragraphs in the description.
I would appreciate any help I might get…
Thanks so much.
webgrrl in reply to By: Cheri Perry’s comment, 3 months ago
i cant find a way to put paragraphs in the description either Cheri. The way i have gone around this is to put a bullet, so that i get some space in between the texts..
webgrrl in reply to By: Cheri Perry’s comment, 3 months ago
you can see the example of what i mean by putting ‘bullet’ to give me the ‘space’ i need in the Description part, here
By: Cheri Perry, 3 months ago
Thanks for replying anyways….I know there is a way because I see people doing it on here some how…. I’ll figure it out some day..lol Thanks.
