OUTBACK ECLIPSE FESTIVAL 2002

4th December 2002 – my first total eclipse of the sun experience, which was in the desert of south australia.. Over 8000 people from all over the world turned up to witness the eclipse just near sunset.. with a totality of 27 seconds. The festival went for 5 days with non stop Psytrance music on several stages..

I also trekked to Turkey in 2006 to attend my 2nd total eclipse experience – i hope to experience four if im able (2009 India/Nepal and 2012 Australia). Its an experience everyone should witness .. People ive met at these festivals have become long life connections…

this picture has a little story here in my journal

  • Jessica Shipard

    Jessica Shipard

This is possibly the best sillouette I have ever seen! Art and photography is so subjective, but from my perspective this is fantastic. It is a perfect demonstration of humans getting together for a common cause and it just looks so good!

well for me it is, since I haven’t ever really seen an eclipse like this one before!!, and the black and white works well in this picture too!! Great picture!!

  • webgrrl

    webgrrl

thanks Dragoncat.. and everyone.. This picture has no modification – its not black and white either.. thats how dark it gets (and darker) when the totality happens.. when the moon and the sun come together.. or something like that… This totality was for 27 seconds only compared to the one in Turkey last year which went just over 3 minutes!

A mind blowing Image, super sensational !!!!!!!!!

actually i lie.. the modifications i made on this pic are taking the noise out and despeckle and smooth – gotta understand, this was taken with my first digital – Olympus C700 UZ, and i didnt take this in full size capacity either.. cuz i only had a limited of cardspace and a limited amount of rechargeable batteries to last me over the time of a week out in the middle of no where at Lyndhurst, South Australia (Located 606 km north of Adelaide, Lyndhurst is an historic old railway town which is now nothing more than a few buildings at the crossroads of the Strzelecki and Oodnadatta Tracks.)

Ah Webgrrl, this brings back memories! Looking at the composition of this photo I could have been standing right next to you as you took this. I must say you did a much better job of capturing it than I did, I was too excited I was actually going to witness a solar eclipse. Great photo, thanks for posting.

  • webgrrl

    webgrrl

Jordan : there was no one standing with me..beside me.. for quite some time. The sun/eclipse was HUGE (especially when i compared it to what i saw last year at in Turkey) – i always wonder how many of those sillouettes i know.. I only got 2 good shots ..the rest of was too bright where the sun was.. as i didnt use filter. In Turkey last year, i didnt use filter either.. Those pics will come here soon..

    Wonderful image! :)

I was lucky enough to witness a partial solar eclipse back in, I think 1999 which was great. I would love to see a total solar eclipse one day though.

next total eclipse in Australia is on November 13, 2012 where it will start its journey/path right in the middle of Arnehm land and pass thru to Cairns/top end.. and then onto the waters. I do believe the 2012 eclipse, Australia will be the only land the eclipse path happens :)

Start planning now… cuz the next time a total eclipse of the sun to happen in Australia wont be till 2028 :0

I hope I can get a shot half as good.

Greetings, webgrrl! This is by far one of the most wonderful images I’ve ever seen!! And I’m an old guy, life-long photographer, very visually turned on to the world, grew up in the 60’s, etc., etc. I have this waiting in my shopping cart to purchase, probably as a mounted print. I’m hoping the print does justice to the promise of this great photo, in terms of fidelity, image quality, resolution. I’ll Bmail you about questions. Just wanted to say, I love your work - you’re quite prolific, spiritual, and wonderfully creative!
The thing about this image that is so great, aside from the stunning eclipse-infused color and tonal luminosity, is how you’ve captured the powerful, sacred human ritual of shared witnessing/celebration beneath this spectacular event. Congratulations on such a brilliant image -
    it’s thrilling!! Cheers, mate! Rich
