The Atrium

Wendi Donaldson

Victoria, Canada

Artist's Description

Externally, horizontal ribbons of fibre-reinforced concrete Ductal spandrel panels express a natural colour and a fine texture, recalling the handcrafted brick and stone in Victoria’s historic buildings.
Inside the Atrium, horizontal ribbons of panelized hemlock slats follow the sweep of the atrium’s curving walls. Tongue-and-groove cedar soffits bring warmth and definition to the building’s street level.
Small-dimension lumber is expressed in a structural capacity with twelve filigreed wood trusses that support the atrium’s 670m2 skylight. The lenticular shape of the truss chords is achieved by building up arched strands of Mountain Pine beetle-killed lumber, and spacing them with elliptical glulam blocks of reclaimed Douglas fir.
Vegetated roofs with 6 inches of growing medium planted with sedums and other shallow-rooted plants, along with areas of one-foot growing medium with small shrubs.
