Fan Tan Alley, Victoria, BC

As I was taking photographs in Chinatown, this charming man stopped to tell me about his boyhood memories, of playing checkers long into the night here, over 50 years ago. He told me of the characters who would come into the alley – for a breath of ‘fresh air’ after gambling and being in the opium dens there.
I loved his hat…how he embraced both cultures that have influenced him…the Chinese coin and the jaunty feather in his cap! :)
