Ottawa
Rotunda, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa Canada
This is the grand entrance to the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.
The Centre, East and West blocks of the Parliament Buildings were built between 1859 and 1866 (excluding the Peace Tower and Library).
On February 3, 1916, near 9 p.m., a small fire started in the Parliamentary Reading Room in the Centre Block. Fed by stacks of newspapers and varnished woodwork, it was soon a raging blaze that claimed seven lives and reduced all but the north-west wing and the Library to a charred shell. Had an employee not closed the Library’s iron doors in time, thousands of irreplaceable books would also have been lost.
So strong was Canada’s commitment to maintaining a permanent home for Parliament that it began rebuilding the Centre Block while still embroiled in the First World War. The new structure, which preserved the Gothic Revival style of the original, was designed by John Pearson and Jean Omer Marchand and completed by 1922.

Very unusual view, Wendi – great detail of the fan vaulting and lovely reflections in the marble floor. May I ask how old the building is?
Wendi Donaldson replied
Thanks for your kind remarks….I’ve added a little more history to this image….this building burned down in 1916 but was rebuilt and completed in 1922.

Great shot Wendi. I was in Ottawa in the summer and it was beautiful. I also tried shooting the pillars but it didn’t come out nearly as nice as yours. As a side note (I did the tour) when the library burned a copy of James Audubon’s Bird’s of American was destroyed. After the fire James’ wife donated a copy of the book with marginal notes to the Library. It is the most expensive book in the library. I think the guide said it was $13,000,000
Wendi Donaldson replied
So glad you like this one. The Library is amazing – have quite a few shots of that…I’ve seen that book…it’s beautiful. (We were lucky enough to get a private tour thru a relative who works there.)
